@topher the problem is the #Enshittifiaction and #Enfattening of #Websites and #Applications!

Seriously, I think that #Microsoft should be sued into insolvency for the way they create 100% avoidable #eWaste with #CensorBoot and #Windows11 to the point that if I didn't have my current job, I'd basically collect all the old machines from companies that are stupid enough to use #Windows [and they'll likely give them away for free minus SSDs / HDDs instead of paying €5+ for #recycling], shove some #Linux on [i.e. #RaspberryPiOS, #BunsenLabsLinux or #UbuntuLTS] and sell those off as used electronics for a good profit.

@topher @nekohayo +1 thanks...

I think it's important to #reuse, #repair & #upcycle not only when money is tight, but as a matter of principle.

  • Every production is a toll on the planet and ecosystem and thus we should not only choose #RepairableTech but also keep stuff up and running or at least salvage tech...

Again: I started @OS1337 as an exercise in #minimalism as my #P11Z is getting too slow for @bunsenlabs / #BunsenlabsLinux.

  • Abeit the current target is a #1440kB version that allows one to #SSH into things and work that way...

@krutonium I can recommend @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabsLinux which runs smooth in my #Vaio #P11Z with the shitty #GMA500 in #llvmpipe.

  • If that's too straining, consider #TinyCore, which us a #BusyBox-based distro - abeit very minimalist.

Those are the options with a fancy #GUI.

#i486#linux#i386

@robobox well, if a modern #Linux like @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS is too straining consider something like @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabsLinux or #PorteusKiosk or #TinyCore instead?

Personally I'm working on a minimalist #TUI-focussed #toybox + #musl / Linux distro called "OS/1337" with the current goal to make a MVP that fits on a 1440kB 3,5" FDD!

And whilst @OS1337 isn't nearly as close to release-able, I dp recommend the aforementioned #Distros instead as they should allow you to still use even a low-end #T60 configuration productively.

@SweetAIBelle Needless to say I'm convinced I can just boot @OS1337 from either a #USB-#Floppy(-#Emulator via USB Adaptor) or regular #flashdrive using #Ventoy, as #ISOLINUX distro...

I'll test it out today...

Luckily I have some "bare metal" to test against:

  • Sony Vaio P11Z (Atom Z520 / i586 & sse3_atom)
  • hp t530 (AMD GX-212 / i686, amd64 & sse4.1 )
  • Zotac IONITX A-E (Atom 330 / i586, amd64 & sse3_atom)

Sadly I don't have much more "lower end" or "legacy" systems as a significant collection of mine got stolen from storage years ago and I don't have the money flying around to build @rasteri 's #Wee86 / #WeeCee... I was thinking about getting one of those Dell Wyse 3040 which AFAIK come with a #cursed #32bit #UEFI...

Sadly "Potato-level" #Netbooks running #VIA #C7 chips are nowadays rare and absurdly expensive and targeting those would be good as they already get too slow for mainstream 32bit distros like #BunsenLabsLinux so repurposing those as #OS1337 testing machines and target hardware may be a good option...
Tho just clocking down a #ThinClient with VIA Edenwould be sufficient to test out.

One of the machines that stolen from me was a Futro S300 with a #Transmeta CPU that I originally intended to use as #Windows95 box...

  • Like with #Android - #ROMs I've to likely do custom .config files to target such hardware and stay within the 1440kB size Limit for or the "CORE Edition"...
eBayDell Wyse 3040 | Thin Client Mini PC | 2 GB RAM 8 GB eMMC | Atom x5-Z8350 | Dell | eBayFestplatte: 8 GB eMMC. 1 x Netzteil. 2 x DisplayPort. >> Sie haben 1 Jahr Gewährleistung als Verbraucher. RAM: 2 GB DDR3L RAM (1,35 V). OS: kein Betriebssystem / no OS. 1 x LAN (RJ 45), 2 x USB 2.0, 1 x USB 3.1 Gen 1.

@Melissabeartrix @jackyan @stevendbrewer OFC there are countless options.

Were it not for your mother but like a child, I'd consider pointing at #RaspberryPiOS or for gamers to #pop_OS, for some really old machine I'd point at #BunsenLabsLinux and #TinyCore or for some "Guest Computer" I'd recommend #PorteusKiosk...

  • I stick with #UbuntuLTS for the most part because it's convenient, gets 5 years free updates after release and also has a big, beginner-friendly community and likely gets support by 3rd parties when it comes to commercial software...

But my priorities may not he yours so it's good to have options on the table.

  • #Dayon is just convenient because it doesn't require some central service to be up but just the supporting person to have like a (dynamic) DNS or static IP configured as it acts like a "Reverse-VNC-Server" and is very user-friendly on the "Assisted" side of things by just asking for IP/domain & port to connect to.

@LambdaCalculus @cryptoparty
OFC @vkc did have more than a valid point why she'd not trust @ubuntu and those are all valid...

The good part is that #Linux isn't dependent on the interests of one big Corporation, redardless if #RedHat, #SUSE, #Canonical, #Microsoft, #Google or god forbid #Oracle...

There are mamy options and that is a good thing!

@kuba @venthewolf I disagree to some degree, as my recommendation to #UbuntuLTS is based off:

Shure, if one's just #gaming, then @system76 's #pop_os may be a better solution...

@xgranade Or you could just use some #simple, #airgapped #Linux machine like getting a cheap old #ThinkPad and put @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabsLinux or @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS on.

In fact, I do have an old #VaioP #P11Z with #BunsenLabs on and that's a cute little writing machine...

Tho I'm working on @OS1337 and once that's done this should provide users with #DistractionFreeComputing & #DistractionFreeWriting in 80x25 characters...

Shameless self-promotion aside: Yes, I do have a typewriter too...

@LateNightLinux OFC you were - just like @heiseonline @ct_Magazin were when they bought some #Fujitsu #Futro Thin client with a Celeron J4105 in it, to the point that these are nowadays completely jacked up in pricing on #eBay.de ...

Personally, I use some #hp #t620's as #MiniServer and they run flawlessly with @ubuntu / #Ubuntu 22.04 LTS #Server...

OFC they can also run @Raspberry_Pi #RaspberryPiOS, @bunsenlabs #BunsenLabsLinux and even @tails_live #Tails just fine...
