So, I don't want to piss people off, but I feel like #ubuntu and Ubuntu server just aren't what they used to be.
I heard that upgrading to the 24.04 has caused issues for some people, and indeed my wsl installation broke when upgrading. Let me be clear, bugs in an upgrade are normal, but in that case the script just told me hey! there's errors and that I could reboot the system, it didn't role me back or really offer any other choices. The system did not boot again.
When I upgraded to the latest server lts, Ubuntu spontaneously decided that whenever I'd update a package it'd restart services without asking, I don't like that, especially since the release upgrader/setup scripts didn't ask me if that was okay. I'll decide myself if/when to restart things and yeah, when you consider the fact that there are conferencing servers on there, yeah, not great.
I also get messages about Ubuntu pro, and the package updates that would be available if I signed up.
There's also the decision to include snap in the server version.
Like, it is usable, but in terms of an OS for any future servers of mine? will probably pick something else.
May also migrate to another OS.
Does anyone agree with my views or am I the only one?

How we got whitelisting in unattended-upgrades. Conversation with mvogt.. Things are much more complicated nowadays, from my own need to merge took a couple days. I forget why I needed it now... and I can't remember using it more than a handful of times in the last 11 years. Anyway I have hundreds of these conversations with friendly programmers, free software advocates and just good people in the free software community. Will archive em.. thought I would be cool just binning em but too many good memories here.

@simonzerafa I mean obviously #reuse / #UseLonger is better and if your options are "corporate surplus" or nothing then I'd never judge.

To me it's just that #ThinkPad as a brand has really died as every single Device is a #downgrade in #repairability & #upgradeability compared to my #X230Tablet:

Personally, I wish I had €.€€€.€€€ so I could just develop the #NUCbook and be done with the #Enshittification of #Laptops / #Notebooks!

I'm having a great experience migrating Ubuntu -> Manjaro. My display looks better. More of what I want is supported in repos. Snap is finally out of my life.

My two beefs are:

* Setting up ssh-askpass at login wasn't as straightforward as I might have liked.

* I need to install *all* of BIND to get the handful of client tools I want. (I won't, I'll build what I need from source instead.)

I have an old #asus where the #pciex16 obviously died.

Any graphics card I put into the #pciex16 slot makes it crash and prevents it from booting. I also do not get any graphics output at all at boot.

However, I can access the pc #headless via #ssh . It has #ubuntu server installed.

Is there any chance to connect this to any modern monitor having D-SUB, so that I can at least access the #bios or set up something non-headless ?

It has a 350 W power supply, so that is probably not the issue.

Today I succeeded in setting up my #BigBlueButton story hour system on my new #Ubuntu computer using two instances of #OBS and I am quite proud of myself. I was looking all over for a solution to my problem (wanting to use a green screen and virtual background, yet also needing to record the whole session with OBS, since BigBlueButton's session recording doesn't work), and I had almost given up until I came across just six ASCII characters that made it possible: "obs -m" I have no idea how or why it works, but it does. I wrote a thorough how-to for myself so I won't panic five minutes before the next story hour. (1/2)
