@freya @BrodieOnLinux lets just say the idea of @OS1337 is to see what is the minimum viable #Linux distro to get essential work done, and to me that means an #SSH #Terminal.

And I have nothing beyond the #Xbox360.

  • Basically having some nimble "swiss knife" one can use to recover data or get basic stuff setup, because many old systems are a pain in the ass to setup from a clean slate and/or non-original & specifically modified parts.

Even if it's just a sort-of "#Foreman" image that then just dd a base system image or yeets data from a drive...

Granted, @OS1337 won't run on anything below an #i486SX due to #Linux dropping #i386 with Kernel 3.6.9 & 3.4.99 respectably and #toybox AFAICT never supported anything below #i486 and #backporting it doesn't make sense nor do I have the skills to do so nor would I expect @landley to accept the necessary patches:

  • Similar to Linux this would create a shitload of work that noone wants to do nor should do and thus violate the project goals of toybox by complicating things...

Or as @torvalds once supposedly wrote: "I'm not sentimental. Good riddance."...

Tho I can tell from testing first builds of @OS1337 I can assure you it'll not be as fast as the Tandy 1000RL booting #MSDOS from #ROM but that's solely due to the fact that more modern architectures like #i486 have way more stuff going on than the #i086...

  • Still I think that this can be a really nifty tool when combined with a #TUI / #CLI - based "#desktop" or at least easy to use menu and programs to get that experience in 80x25 lines [24 useable, 25th being used as a taskbar for OS/1337 and indicate essentials like which session is being used, battery percentage and time / connected host on SSH...

@krutonium I can recommend @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabsLinux which runs smooth in my #Vaio #P11Z with the shitty #GMA500 in #llvmpipe.

  • If that's too straining, consider #TinyCore, which us a #BusyBox-based distro - abeit very minimalist.

Those are the options with a fancy #GUI.

@SweetAIBelle @OS1337 nodds in agreement

Whilst I do want to focus on #CLI & #TUI tools first, since those offer the most "bang per storage" I can totally see why you want to go beyond that with something close to #TinyCore which packs a full #Xorg desktop onto 16MB, I'd guess this will be something to aim for post 1.0 if not 2.x.

  • A lot of tools like #gparted can be substituted with others that are functionally cose enough, like #cfdisk, to do partitioning.

That being said I do think that a lightweight #GUI #Desktop like #OpenBox or #i3-gaps or #Sway is something nice and would propably fit well as an "extra" or "fancy desktop" package.

  • Personally I do want to be able to target like low and lowest-end systems and at least have something instead of #MSDOS and old #Windows versions to run on #i486.

Not to mention that there are few and far in between options outside of #ix86 for most systems:

  • "Don't like #NetBSD or the native OS to some obscure system? Tough shit..."

During the live stream I replaced the part of the large power trace that was still broken…

Dug the old one, like on a road, and super-glued a new one in-place. It's the shiny one passing above L3 on the third photo.

I ended the stream to watch @virtualabs

After the stream I replaced part of another trace on the other side that I forgot had a large hole inside.

Then I cleaned it a lot… and gave it a good wash, it's now hung for drying.

I was a twenty-year-old college #dropout who had lucked into the job after the department’s director noticed that his temporary secretary (me) was way better at automating repetitive tasks in #Microsoft Office than typing up memos.

So he hired me outright (neglecting to increase my administrative-assistant-level wage 😖) and set me loose helping the engineers with their Sun #Unix workstations and #Intel #i486-based PCs running #Windows for Workgroups. (2/6)

@kuba @venthewolf I disagree to some degree, as my recommendation to #UbuntuLTS is based off:

Shure, if one's just #gaming, then @system76 's #pop_os may be a better solution...

@mos_8502 uwu!

I do agree, some #NeoRetro machine would be cool as sadly the #CommanderX16 isn't the saviour everyone thought it'll be

And yes I know a lot of folks who kinda refrained from ordering it since it went sideways from their perspective...

I mean, I do know some projects that might want to use such redesigned "SIMMs" but none I could namedrop here as of today...

Needless to say I do want to see something cool to be done with like an #eZ80 or #65C816 or mc68k in the future but I don't want to spoil things too early...

And yes maybe even some #i486 machines...
