Which hit home, hearing it from him, who with other board members of humanetech.com have the rolodex to be in-the-know.

> “It’s almost like they recognize that technology is influencing kids’ development, and they make their domestic version a spinach version of #TikTok, while they ship the opium version to the rest of the world,” #TristanHarris, cofounder of the Center for Humane Technology and a former Google employee, told 60 Minutes. But I don’t think that the difference between the two platforms is the result of some sort of conspiracy...

MIT Technology Review · How China takes extreme measures to keep teens off TikTokBy Zeyi Yang

Should Western Democracies ban the general public from learning about, using, or building their own AI technologies? | POLITICO

Whoops, does that sound iliberal or contentious? That’s me paraphrasing; the original quote goes like this:

“The Harris-Zuckerberg showdown captures another key question for policymakers: Should AI be limited to a handful of trusted companies or opened up to all comers to exploit?”

…that said, I think I captured the nuance better in the title of this post.

The article from Politico is attached and well worth reading, especially for the story about Tristan Harris.

POLITICO · Inside the shadowy global battle to tame the world’s most dangerous technologyBy Mark Scott

(#tristanharris)

In this one hour talk #TristanHarris and #AzaRaskin of the #centerforhumanetechnology discuss how existing A.I. capabilities already pose catastrophic risks to a functional society, how A.I. companies are caught in a race to deploy as quickly as possible without adequate safety measures, and what it would mean to upgrade our institutions to a post-A.I. world.

The hype around A.I. lately is simultaneously too much, too little, and frequently focused on the wrong things.

Yes, it’s an exciting leap in technology. It can do near magical things. It’s capabilities are growing at a ridiculously fast pace, and it will only get faster.

It’s going to revolutionize the information processing capabilities of nearly everyone. The economic impacts of this revolution are going to be massive and unlike previous technological revolutions, this one is likely to impact the upper middle class workers of the world.

But there’s a *much* darker side to this than just fretting about jobs.

A.I. is going to make it absurdly easy for malicious actors to mess with society. We’ve already seen how social media can divide our society to the point where we can’t even agree on basic facts. What will an army of A.I. powered bots, who are indistinguishable from real people, flooding our information streams with misinformation do?

This article mostly echoes my thoughts, but it’s probably more well written than I could say it.

The New York Times · Opinion | Yuval Harari on Threats to Humanity Posed by A.I.By Yuval Harari

"With few exceptions, tech company leaders claim their platforms are simply a neutral mirror of society and hold users responsible for generating polarizing content. Despite what the companies say, the digital tools they’ve created are not neutral mirrors. Their affordances and algorithms incentivize polarization by amplifying divisive content – making their platforms more like fun house mirrors where you don’t know if what you’re seeing is real or an illusion." Tristan Harris has explored the influences that hijack human attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs, from his childhood as a magician to his coursework in Stanford’s Persuasive Technology Lab to his leadership as a Design Ethicist at Google. Today, he studies how major technology platforms wield dangerous power over our ability to make sense of the world and leads the call for systemic change.
