The hype around A.I. lately is simultaneously too much, too little, and frequently focused on the wrong things.
Yes, it’s an exciting leap in technology. It can do near magical things. It’s capabilities are growing at a ridiculously fast pace, and it will only get faster.
It’s going to revolutionize the information processing capabilities of nearly everyone. The economic impacts of this revolution are going to be massive and unlike previous technological revolutions, this one is likely to impact the upper middle class workers of the world.
But there’s a *much* darker side to this than just fretting about jobs.
A.I. is going to make it absurdly easy for malicious actors to mess with society. We’ve already seen how social media can divide our society to the point where we can’t even agree on basic facts. What will an army of A.I. powered bots, who are indistinguishable from real people, flooding our information streams with misinformation do?
