No-one is going to be surprised that the Govt. has launched an investigation into the problems at the Office of National Statistics.

Led by Sir Robert Devereux (ex-senior civil servant), it will examine 'the efficacy & capability of the ONS, as well as its organisational structure, culture & leadership, after internal work failed to fix the problems identified with specific data sets'!

Other than tech-deployment problems it'll be interesting to see what else Devereux uncovers?

I'm no Economist - but this seems .. Stupid?

"Yoga mats and VR headsets used to measure inflation" - BBC

"Both items have made their way into the basket of goods and services used by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to calculate inflation.

The basket contains 752 items. The ONS collects the costs of these products and services across many different retailers to come up with the monthly inflation figures."

Funding uncertainty threatens U.S. economic data, federal statistics : NPR
USA but touches on interesting broader long-term issues like preparation tests for national census and the need for changing methods to deal with general decline in public willingness to participate in official surveys.
In UK think #ONS has run into similar problems gathering work-related data

Curiosity struck and I went and found this dataset from the #ONS on our national trade figures by region.

The US is the UK's biggest single trade partner *by far* while exports to the EU as a whole are approximately double our exports to the US, and our imports from the EU are approximately four times bigger than our imports from the US.

Some interesting dynamics to consider as these trade wars ensue.

In the ONS' scramble to try to improve is labour market data, its scrapping the Survey on Living Conditions to free up budget to try and find a way to collect better information about work/employment.

While not the only survey to compile data on living standards, it is notable that the ONS/SLC was directly comparable to EU data sources & thus was one way of tracking how the UK was doing (comparatively) after Brexit.

How odd, that's the survey they're scrapping?

Trouble at the Office of National Statistics continues with staff churn, failing methods & funding problems all undermining reliability of the data on which Govt. depends for formulating policy.

The potential difference between ONS & independent assessment (here by the Resolution Foundation) of employment suggest labour market policy (especially regarding the 'economically inactive') may be misconceived (which many would argue anyway).

In a sense Labour *is* flying blind

Having seen the quality of the its Labour Force Survey decline quickly after is shift to online responses, leading to policy makers 'flying blind' on employment & related data.... the ONS is now hiring a army of temporary interviewers to revive the old method of collecting LFS data.

But, they're using low-paid temporary staff for this (reflecting the labour market they're researching), suggesting we *may* see better labour market data at some point.

The Guardian · ONS to spend millions on temp workers to fix ‘unusable’ UK employment dataBy Richard Partington

As we know, the Office for National Statistics is engulfed in a growing crisis of unreliability.... if you want some more detail, here's Heather Stewart joining the dots.

The real Q. is whether other data (as Jonathan Portes believes) will be able to give parallel indications to policy makers, or whether they really are starting to 'fly blind' (as I rather suspect they are).....

UK life expectancy down - we're living shorter lives

bracknellnews.co.uk/news/24772
ONS figures: 'life expectancy at birth in 2021-23 remained lower than before the #Covid19 pandemic in a majority of areas for both males (288 of 348 local authorities, or 83%) and females (242 authorities, or 70%).'
'Greg Ceely, #ONS head of population health monitoring, said: “Today’s data show a decline in #lifeexpectancy in most areas during 2021 to 2023, compared with the period of 2017 to 2019.'

The year is 2043, elderly euthanise rather than await medical treatment. 4000 landlords own 90% of property in the UK, rents are 60% of income, raised 10% per year. Looming population decline threatens demand for ever greedy passive incomes. Banks continue to loan, governments still fuel the Bourgeoisie. Still mysterious the absence of revolution.
