Question for #trombone and #euphonium players (and anyone else with an opinion): It's common for people to double on these instruments. I submit that we can always tell which one is a person's primary instrument.

My guess is it's because you have to blow them differently to achieve the characteristic timbre.

A trombonist will tend to blow a euphonium too hard, resulting in roughness in the sound.

A euphoniumist will have difficulty making the trombone resonate properly. This is evident even when the person plays both instruments well enough to handle paying gigs without any trouble. Evident, even, in professional orchestral trombonists who pick up a euphonium occasionally to play Bydlo or tenor tuba parts.

Do you agree or disagree or have a different take on it?

Greetings fediverse! This is my #introduction post.

My name is Dave, and I'm a musician in Tucson, Arizona, where I retired with my wife after a career outside of music. I've always enjoyed playing and writing music, and kept up with it on an amateur/semi-professional basis through the years. Now I have time to focus on it. I'm playing in several local groups and I'd love to learn about music in your part of the world. I play #euphonium and #trombone and I offer private #musiclessons on those instruments. I also write and arrange music in the broad category of "classical". See neopragma.github.io/dnmusic for more about that. Cheers!

To celebrate two years car free I rode my bike to play my euphonium in a #tubachristmas a decent bike ride from home(60 km). I feel so fortunate to be able to do that and am happy that it was fairly decent biking there but the paved shoulder on Chippendale Ave was very rough on a lot of it. I detoured over to Denmark Ave for part of it and the gravel was almost as smooth but way less traffic. I also saw a illuminated holiday parade on the way home. #biketooter #euphonium

Sad to say, today I had to give up on playing the first movement of the solo I was working on. I recognize my limits for what they are and knew I wouldn't have been able to make it performance ready in time for the recital I was going to perform at. So, since I only have to play one song, I'm choosing the second movement as it's more relaxed. But that's not what I'm here for. I'm looking for some genuine ideas on how to increase my ability to play at a higher register on my instrument. I'm a Euphonium player but any brass instrument players feel free to give me some tips on what I can do to help me get up there. Trumpet players make it sound so easy but I want to know how to do it physically, and what mental things do you do to stop yourself tightening up your muscles whenever you have to play at a higher register because I get nervous every time and it causes more problems than it solves. #brass #euphonium #music

I’m finding the lower register of the Euphonium more difficult than I feel it should be. Everyone says the higher register (G and above) is more difficult — rightfully so — but I feel going below C (Bb) is difficult to get consistently.

(Note: We’re talking me spending a few months of experience trying to make sound, so I’m anything but skilled at this point.)

I’ll find time for more practice tonight.

This picture of a #euphonium looks a little more like what I personally play. Also, Picture Smart has given me the absolute best description I could've asked for this instrument and I figured I'd share it with all of you. Please enjoy this more accurate picture of a euphonium. Since I can only post one line of alt-text, here's the full description. Description: The image shows a brass musical instrument, specifically a euphonium. It has a silver or nickel-plated finish which gives it a shiny appearance. The body of the euphonium consists of tubes that are wound and looped into a compact form, with a flaring bell at one end that points upward. Towards the top of the instrument, you can see a series of valves, typically three or four, each connected to a valve button that the player presses to change the pitch of the notes.

The valves are arranged vertically in a row, and there are small pieces of tubing connected to each valve known as valve slides. Additionally, there is a larger, curved slide parallel to the valves, known as the tuning slide, which allows the player to adjust the instrument's tuning.

The euphonium is similar in shape to a tuba but is smaller in size and has a pitch range in the tenor-voice register, usually an octave above the tuba. It is commonly used in concert bands, brass bands, and sometimes in orchestras and is known for its rich, mellow sound that blends well with other brass instruments. @app Anything you can do to make it so we can post multiple lines of alt-text for a longer description?

As a student I played brass instruments at school: #trumpet, #euphonium. It's been 20+ years, and music teaching/learning technology has moved on.

Instead of picking up my old Yamaha student trumpet with it's sticky first valve and cracking open my copy of Arban and perching it on my laptop as a music stand; does anyone have recommended instruments and/or technology aids to investigate?

Please recommend music apps, sources of music, brass (plastic okay 🎺) instruments that are fun and good.

Currently a Sr DevOps Engineer at a company where I work with #Azure, #Terraform, and #Powershell every day by choice and really enjoy it.

Long time Windows user, though Windows 11 might drive me to Linux.

Big fan of long distance walks through cities. 3 miles is a good start.

I dabble in many of the usual geek pastimes, have possibly tried more sodas than you ever knew existed, and have a soft spot for concert band music. Especially if they feature a #euphonium.

@cary5871 Also, what kind of keyboard do you have? I'm hoping to get a NI m32 or a61 since i hear those're accessible and they have weighted keys which are important. I'd also love to start learning piano but I don't read music instead preferring to memorize all of the music I play. I play the Baratone and the #Euphonium.
