One important thing my anarchist mentors taught me about smashing The State (TM), is that we mean something very specific by it; what political scientists call the 'monopoly on violence'.

The normalisation of "violence down the hierarchy, as Derrick Jensen put it in Endgame, while pathologising even the most trivial use of force against the hierarchy. Police brutality isn't even news. While throwing a cream pie at a PR hack or CEO is "assault".

So it *feels* (and I'm new, so I'm sure this question has been addressed already!) like the kind of governance that's bad is "the state," but the kind that's good is "not the state." It's mutual aid, or it's anarcho-syndicalist, or maybe you call it "horizontal," but it's still a set of practices--dare I say it, rules--that *govern* your society. And I have no objection to that!

But it's not the fabled "no government" in "there's no government like no government."

Here's the discourse I'm waiting to find: someone addressing the circular reasoning problem of "the state." I've seen some really interesting proposed models of how a society could truly *govern itself* rather than creating a layer of, well, "archons" above them. But that looks a hell of a lot like a state structure, to me, just a flat one.

"Ultimately, it is the sort of book which should be mandatory reading for all #CivilServants and Politicians of every colour. We have to reconfigure the interface between the citizen and the state in order for them to have a more copacetic relationship. We have to redesign #thestate so that it is able to meet the challenges of today. We have to ensure that it is able to rapidly adapt to the challenges of tomorrow."

"The #extremeright does not hate #thestate, but just enough to gain access to it and occupy it. Once in power it does not destroy it, it tries to reconfigure it. #Milei, #Trump or #Bolsonaro aim to destroy public regulations that deal with social reproduction and favour private regulation of #capitalAccumulation. State action is not dissolved but reoriented to constitute a new, ultra-punitive power of command capable of assisting the order required by the #markets."

Important & timely reminder.

"Here and now, the state is oriented towards maintaining the conditions needed for the accumulation of capital.
"That has been the British state’s role since the 17th century, despite the preservation of several feudal forms. It has taken on and discarded specific functions, including under the pressure of class struggle, but all within that overarching framework."

Tangentially, I just searched for #DerryGirls on DVD or blu-ray, hoping to add it to my wishlist for my birthday next month, but apparently it's streaming only? 🙁

According to a reddit thread, music licensing and budget is preventing it from solid format release.

Damn, so it's gonna take decades like #MTV and #TheState did, if at all.

> .. once a man has appealed to the State... to remain in his job and has been granted such permission, it is not exactly the same job as it was before. Others will not be given the same permission, and he should not evade the question whether he can acquiesce in and to a degree benefit from such discrimination.. his case arises from the fact that officials regard his work as.. a contribution to the #WarEffort or from a desire to placate and silence an influential person.

"Universities are contested, contradictory spaces in society: they facilitate the pursuit of #justice and #freedom, but also serve as an ideological support and resource supply for dominant, hierarchical systems. Although #public universities receive taxpayer support, this does not necessarily make #universities mere instrument of #TheState. They can and often do serve state interests, however."
