As a lot of new people seem to be joining here, I thought I should have a go at an #introduction.

I am I guess a bit unusual in having been a serial entrepreneur, and a business advisor, but also a life-long socialist. I started my first business while still at school, and another at university; then I discovered social enterprise - using business models and methods not for private gain, but for common benefit. I got involved in the wholefood co-op and radical bookshop movements, then went on to work in social enterprise development, setting up a co-operative specialising in organisational structure design, writing a number of technical guides on this, and on how to restructure conventional organisations as co-ops and social enterprises - and indeed advising on some of the largest transformations to social enterprise in the UK. I went on to work internationally on the development of legislation and financial support for social enterprise, both for governments and international aid bodies.

Throughout I also worked with universities, first in cultural history and then in social enterprise. Alongside my PhD I taught on the Keele University 'American Mind' course - a broad cultural survey course. I've studied many aspects of history, culture and the arts - and been a part-time practitioner in both pottery and music (guitar) - but my main early focus was on literature. Later, naturally, I became more involved in teaching and researching social enterprise development, working with a number of universities and other organisations.

YarraBUG podcast with Geoff Smart, from Back2Bikes. B2B is a community bike workshop that refurbishes second hand bikes, provides bikes to communities in need, and incidentally does a great job of keeping my beater bike running smooth as butter.

Back2Bikes are losing their Port Melbourne workshop and are looking for a new home in the inner south--- does anyone know somewhere suitable?

Here’s my small business story. I’d love any help or thoughts on progressing to something new in this rapidly changing world and perhaps putting something back.

I was happily working as a senior landscape architect in a small company when I got pregnant. Statutory benefits which were not really enough to get by, so maternity leave was a struggle. In the end though I quit my job because of issues with requesting to work part time (this was the mid 2000s).

After freelancing for a while and scraping by, I started to notice that it was easier to fit in full project commissions with my life than working in other practices on fixed days so I started to focus on those and in the end had enough customers to consider setting up as a limited company and taking on an employee.

It’s been an exciting and at times gruelling journey, dealing with clients, working all hours to meet deadlines, learning how to survive.

After 13 years I have four employees. I’m not planning to grow much more but would like to re-direct my company to do something more socially useful. I’ve done most of the basic stuff I can do on climate / environment like switching banks, pensions, educating the team, speaking to suppliers, learning about low carbon materials, travel less, got an EV. We work in the construction industry so in many way it is what it is…

I still need the income from my commercial work to pay the bills / my employees.

Some options include:

1. Turn the company into a BCorp
2. Market ourselves at more socially responsible customers
3. Become employee owned
4. Set up a new social enterprise on the side and gradually switch over to that
5. Put more money towards others doing useful things.

Any thoughts welcome. 🙏

Tonight, in Totnes, a dragons' den with a difference. 🐲This time, the community are the dragons - able to help change the face of the local economy and town by investing ££, time or support in an e-car club, a newspaper, culture and food businesses.

It's the 12 Local Entrepreneur Forum hosted the Reconomy Project, a hub aiming to support a strong, resilient and equitable local economy.

Good luck to all four projects pitching! Find out more: reconomycentre.org/
