I asked some time ago, but then life took over priorities.
What do people use these days as #homeserver ?
I am running an old desktop PC, and an old Intel NUC, but they are both ~10 years old, and they are struggling for instance when Jellyfin decides it has to transcode something big.
I'm planning on buying something used, but I'm not thrilled by tiny form factors (I like to have more than one SATA disk) or huge gaming rigs.
PciE for GPU maybe?
What do you use?

After mulling over how to use SSL within a LAN in a way that I felt really satisfied with, it took me well over 20 years! Did that ever take a long time.

my adventures in #selfhosting - day 93
Thanks to the brilliant advice of @CyberSaloperie I have found an easy-to-implement, no sweat solution for my redirect issue. I am about to create a test subdomain with #YunoHost to try it out before I make the real switch (from my current Ghost blog to the new, self-hosted one).
Maybe tomorrow I'll share with you the URL of my self-hosted Ghost blog if you want to try things out? I have already imported my existing members, I'm ready to go
And yes, I'm fully aware the timing of my switch (from a Ghost Pro plan to self-hosted) is odd, considering Ghost Pro accounts are now part of the Fediverse. It's just that I couldn't justify spending so much ($31/month) on a free, non-monetized blog that I am capable of self-hosting. It's 6x the cost of my Debian or Ubuntu VPS.
And I kept getting close to the edge of 1000 members, which would have increased my monthly payments. Now I don't have to stress out about getting new readers. From what I understand #ActivityPub followers count as members for Ghost, so someone who gets a sizable following on their federated Ghost site would have to pay more.
I'm sure many people will love this feature (it's fantastic!) but it's not for me. I already have 3 federated Wordpress blogs and too many ActivityPub profiles as it is
I'm an utterly impressed with #immich so far. Sure, importing 35k+ images and 1k videos took most of evening, but I'm really pleased with how well it's performing, and I can't wait to get off iCloud
My #NAS has two network interfaces.
My #Proxmox node has two network interfaces.
I feel an urgent need to utilize that!

As someone who has owned a Plex Lifetime pass forever, this truly pisses me off that they want to charge me to stream my content remotely from my own server. Guess it's the perfect time to switch to JellyFin. I'm in the process of migrating my media anyway, what's one more container?
I'm curious to hear what others are #SelfHosting! Here's my current setup:
Hardware & OS
Infrastructure & Networking
Security & Monitoring
Authentication & Identity Management
Productivity & Personal Tools
Notifications & Development Workflow
Accessibility Focus ️
Accessibility heavily influences my choices—I use a screen reader full-time (#ScreenReader), so I prioritize services usable without sight (#InclusiveDesign, #DigitalAccessibility). Always open to discussing accessibility experiences or recommendations!
I've also experimented with:
I don't really have a media collection, so no Plex or Jellyfin here (#MediaServer)—but I'm always open to suggestions! I've gotten a bit addicted to exploring new self-hosted services!
What's your setup like? Any cool services you'd recommend I try?

IPv6 shenanigans are still afoot - can ping the gateway but nothing beyond it. I can't be the first here...
But the backup script is now in. So when I break it at least I have something to go back with.
#SelfHosting has been productive
When I set up my home server I formated 2 4 Tb drives in RAID 1. I used ext4 at the time because it was what I was familiar with and it was easy. But I know people tend to use other filesystems for these things (zfs?).
What are the drawbacks that I will face for using ext4? Am I going to be fine? #AskFedi #SmallWeb #Linux #HomeLab
#Blind people who #SelfHost, has anyone used #FreshRSS? Currently using #Miniflux, and I like how #accessible it is, but FreshRSS seems to be a little more powerful and I'm tempted to try it. The only thing is that I briefly tried the demo instance, and it didn't seem to be the most accessible. Is anyone using it successfully?

Ok, so what is the fediverse's opinion on Bitwarden and Vaultwarden?
I was giving GrapheneOS a spin and since 1password doesn't have an FDroid app I spun up a vaultwarden docker and installed Bitwarden.
Functionally I like it, and it could be an alternative for my 2FA keys too.
Anything that I should be watching out for? Is there any gotchas that I'm missing?

I've got an old #cisco #ASA 5512-x laying around that I figured might come in handy some day.
My brother recently sent me an article to a fellow who got #opnSense running on it, and of course I had to bite.
It was almost too easy! I tracked down an ancient VGA to IDC connector, installed it on the motherboard, and then changed the BIOS around to boot from a thumbdrive. OpnSense installed without issue, and BAM I have a 7-port gigabit router with a #xeon processor, 8GB of DDR3 and a 128GB SSD.
I haven't tested yet, but supposedly these bad boys can push *almost* full line speed.
Not too bad for free! It appears these can be had online for under $50 all day long.

199X.chat is my self-hosted Revolt instance. Each server can have up to 500 custom animated emojis that anyone can use anywhere. It also has 50 mb uploads. All for free.
I discovered that I can share my Outlook work calendar as an #iCalendar subscription (with three levels of detail).
If I wanted to share this with my wife, I feel I need to parse and rewrite the feed so that it matches my (already shared) personal calendar. E.g., when work cal has out-of-office because I'm home, it should not show as "busy". Did people already build tools for this (that allow #SelfHosting)?
