Maria

Directed by Pablo Larraín; starring Angelina Jolie, Pierfrancesco Favino, Kodi Smit-McPhee; written by Steven Knight (2h04m)

A world-famous but aging opera singer reminisces about her life.

Angelina Jolie gives a vibrant performance as Maria Callas but the core of the film is a protracted and even pretentious framing device that coarsly flashbacks to past moments that, despite having some substance, are too disjointed to be truly insightful.

Rating: D+

Watched the Maria Callas movie on Netflix. It was full of beautiful moments, but ultimately felt slow and directionless. Like, a series of very moving scenes that don't quite add up to a movie.

Angelina Jolie, however, is amazing in it.

And the music was (obviously) amazing.

Worth watching, for sure, but not quite what I hoped.

Gravity is slightly stronger in the Moon's maria (the dark, flat plains formed by ancient volcanic activity) than in other regions of the lunar surface. This phenomenon occurs because the maria are associated with mass concentrations, or mascons—large, dense deposits of basaltic lava that filled ancient impact basins.
