abolitionmedia
Surabaya, Indonesia: Riot Outside East Java Government Building Against New Military Law

A violent clash broke out Monday in the Indonesian metropolis of Surabaya between police and demonstrators protesting against the country’s newly passed military law.

Around 1,000 students and activists dressed in black participated in the protest in front of an East Java government building.

Holding posters that said “Reject the Military Law”, and “The Military Should Return to the Barracks”, protesters hurled rocks, sticks, and Molotov cocktails towards the police guarding the demonstration.

The revision to the armed forces law, pushed mainly by President Prabowo Subianto’s coalition, was aimed at expanding the military’s role beyond defence in a country long influenced by its powerful armed forces especially under the brutal military dictatorship of Suharto called the “New Order” who were avowedly anti-communist and anti-anarchist. Large-scale killings and civil unrest primarily targeting members and supposed sympathizers of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) were carried out in Indonesia from 1965 to 1966. Other affected groups included alleged communist sympathisers, Gerwani women, trade unionists, ethnic Javanese Abangan, ethnic Chinese, atheists, so-called “unbelievers”, and alleged leftists in general. The dictatorship eventually fell in the May 1998 Indonesia riots triggered by corruption, economic problems, including food shortages, mass unemployment, repression, genocide in East Timor and following the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

Surabaya, Indonesia: Riot outside East Java government building against the new Military law

https://abolitionmedia.noblogs.org/?p=17925

#antiMilitarist #asia #indonesia #protests #riot

abolitionmedia
Arson Attack on Seven Army Vehicles in Germany

Never fit for war! Fire to Bundeswehr [German armed forces] fleet

In the course of the Bundestag [German federal parliament] elections, almost all parties outdid each other in increasing arms spending, (re)establishing German military capability, demanding even more arms exports, and obliging young people to serve in the military. The FRG [Federal Republic of Germany] has long since returned to the game of the arms race and mobilization. But wars don’t just need weapons and infrastructure, it needs soldiers, but above all a society that is willing to follow, that is ready to murder and that is ready to blindly and jubilantly accomplish all the atrocities of the world.

Never fit for war!
Not today
Not 2029
Never again
Resist the beginnings…

We are in a crisis in which the next world war does not seem far away. If this war continues to escalate, it will devastate our planet. While the US has withdrawn from the war of aggression in Ukraine, the “united Europe” stands together and openly discusses a real nuclear deterrent against Russia. Every day, events come thick and fast without us finding an answer that does justice to what is happening in this world.

This is not our war – we want a future.
What war is actually being prepared for here? And who benefits from the war?

The wars and conflicts of this world revolve in a significant proportion around energy distribution struggles, access to resources, economic interests and ultimately power. It is not a struggle for democracy, justice or values, even if this is the narrative of the rulers. The majority of people suffer from these wars, while the rich and powerful line their pockets. Western imperialism is trying to maintain its supremacy, while other imperialist forces such as Russia and China want to claim it for themselves. The capitalist system reacts to the current crisis, as so often in history, with destruction and aggression. And the different warring parties never act according to the interests of the people who are directly affected by them. War is always a war of capitalist powers, in which the people of all countries can only lose. Their suffering is portrayed as an inevitable fate and enmity among each other is fueled with nationalism.

We defend our revolutionary position on the question of war and fight for a friendship of all people and peoples!

What is happening in Germany is not preparation for the defense of possible attacks or the establishment of a so-called defensive capability. To become fit for war means to prepare to wage war. What Pistorius and Merz are preparing German society for, also with regard to a global shift in power and a new strengthening of wars to secure energy reserves, zones of power and sales markets, are wars of aggression in other countries with high German participation. To this end, soldiers are to be sent to schools, the civil clause is to be lifted and the infrastructure and health system are to be prepared for the event of war.

Here in the country, rents are rising, the social system is being undermined more and more and at the same time hundreds of billions of euros are to be made available for armaments. And there is no end in sight: In order to meet the 2 percent of GDP demanded by NATO, the special fund is only a milestone, and the debate about further increases has been going on for a long time.

What is happening here is warmongering. Where is the outcry?
A further intensification of a global war is being prepared here in Germany, so we must sabotage the centers of the warmongers.

Out of a clear mind, seven Bundeswehr vehicles were set on fire in the parking lot of a MAN workshop on the night of March 7, because we only like war equipment on fire.

No to rearmament! No to arms exports! No to conscription!
For the peace of the peoples!

Gruppe Agenda2029

ps: We recorded a video of our action. abolitionmedia
Interview with an Anti-Militarist from Odessa

The following interview was carried out by comrades from the Československé anarchistické sdružení – CAS a Czech Internationalist Anarchist Group.

1)Please introduce yourself briefly to the readers of our magazine. Are you from Ukraine, where you were born and spent your youth?

Hi. My name is Vadym Yakovlev, I’m Ukrainian queer writer and journalist and I’m against the war and nationalism. I was born in Odesa, the largest southern multicultural city in Ukraine, a few months before the collapse of the USSR. My mother is Ukrainian and my father is Russian. Their fathers were military. My father worked in a factory. With the collapse of the USSR, the factory was closed, and my father lost his job. It affected my family and my childhood. I grew up in Odesa, but one year before I escaped Ukraine I was living in Lviv, the biggest city of the Western part of Ukraine. At home my relatives spoke Russian and Ukrainian, so I never focused on issues such as national identity. My family was an unhappy international family that lost a lot with the collapse of state communism in Ukraine. I guess all of that influenced me a lot in my search of my true political views and my desire to do something that can have influence on society.

2)You left Ukraine, what led you to this decision?

On the one hand, I could no longer work in Ukraine because of my political beliefs. The Ukrainian intelligentsia, journalists and artists as a community with the beginning of the war decided to become privileged elite propagandists in the service of the state. I didn’t want to be a propagandist, so I lost the opportunity to publish my articles. And if you publicly express in Ukraine the views I have, authorities can put you in the jail. On the other hand, of course due to my views, I didn’t want to go to war on the frontline. That’s why I escaped.

3)What is your attitude towards war and antimilitarism?

Much of my work in Ukraine was related to my anti-patriotic beliefs. My articles and participation in art projects were very often devoted to criticism of Ukrainian patriotism, Ukrainian nationalism and the mainstream privileged “pro-Western” and pro-war civil and cultural Ukrainian elite. I have always been interested in anti-war art and anti-war activism. Since 2022, I had to start doing this, even at the cost of losing the opportunity to stay and work in my native country and the loss of close friends who abandoned me because of my beliefs.

4)The war in Ukraine changed a lot of things. Are you in touch with your friends back home? What are their attitudes towards the war? How do they live?

As I said in answer to the previous question, I lost most of my friends from the privileged art scene and the journalist-activist community. Almost all of them became propagandists, receiving support from the state and Western foundations. I also lost touch with the majority of the Ukrainian leftists, who are supporting militarism, nationalism and NATO. This type of leftists is supported by the state and Western foundations too. But I’m still in touch with my friends, who don’t work with the state and have nothing to do with privileged classes. They support me and my anti-war views. A lot of them, if they are men, are living an awful life now, cause they have to hide all the time at their apartments in the fear of getting outside. Ukrainian army is kidnapping people from the street and sending them on the frontline without their permission. And majority of people with man gender marker in the documents are not allowed by the law to leave the country.

5)Have many people, including anarchists joined the army and left antimilitarism? And not much is known about them? Maybe they are afraid. Do they exist? Are you in contact with them?

Regarding anti-war anarchists in Ukraine, we have anti-war collective called Assembly. They are from Kharkiv and have their own website where they are publishing anti-war and anti-conscription texts. This group of anarchists is anonymous and they hide the names of their team members. This is the only way to conduct any anti-war activity in Ukraine. There was only one Ukrainian organization that did not hide the names of its members and openly spoke out against the war – Ukrainian Pacifist Movement. The Security Service of Ukraine accused them of support of Russia and sent its leader to court. After that, the organization significantly softened its public position, fearing prison. Many Ukrainian leftists sided with the war, it seems to me, because of conformity. They are afraid to express their real position or simply don’t even have one, as it seems to me, and just are following mainstream trend. But these are just my assumptions. In Ukraine, as an authoritarian militaristic country, it is extremely unsafe to be against war.

6)What about Ukrainians in exile? Are they doing any anti-war activities? Are they organizing in workplaces?

Lately, many Ukrainian anti-war initiatives have appeared abroad. For example, Ukrainians are now organizing demonstrations against mobilization and human rights violations in Ukraine. These demonstrations are taking place in Germany, Italy, and France. Often, these actions are organized by Ukrainian leftists who have nothing to do with the pro-war Ukrainian left mainstream such as the so-called “Ukrainian anti-authoritarians” or Solidarity Collectives. All these groups of anti-war Ukrainian leftists are not financed by anyone, they are a personal initiative of convinced and active young people. There will be more of these actions, and I am in active communication with the organizers and members of these initiatives, this is very inspiring! In addition, in the West there are a certain number of Ukrainian scientists and artists who are against the war and who are constantly being marginalized and silenced here in the West. But we have all been silenced for too long, our voices have been erased for too long, and now we are increasingly trying to build horizontal connections at various levels, organizing an anti-war front here abroad against the war and the propagandists. There are many more of us than even we think.

7)The media is silent about the forced mobilization of the Ukrainian government. Rarely does information about deserters leak out? What can you tell us about it?

Nobody knows the exact number of deserters from the Ukrainian side, but according to official and unofficial statistics, there are about 150-200 thousand people! These are huge numbers. The official Ukrainian media are controlled by the state or the Security Service of Ukraine. Ukrainians mainly consume information from anonymous news channels on Telegram or TikTok. It is there that videos of violence against civilians by the Ukrainian army are constantly published. These videos, full of terrible scenes and evidence of human rights violations, do not make it into the official media. The Ukrainian authorities are constantly trying to find the authors of anonymous Telegram channels who criticize the actions of the Ukrainian army or advocate for peace, and put them in prison. Sometimes the authorities succeed. The Ukrainian government, police and the Security Service of Ukraine do not hesitate to use any methods to silence alternative voices. For example, the police recently arrested the mother of a blogger who is abroad and speaks out against forced mobilization, for publishing his post! There are also unofficial ways to shut up dissenters. I remember one teenager who had his own channel on Telegram, where he criticized Ukrainian nationalism and mobilization. He identified himself as an anarchist. Fascists came to his home for a “conversation”, after which he publicly renounced his beliefs. But the pro-war Ukrainian leftists, who are propagandists and accomplices of all these crimes against Ukrainians, will never tell you about such things.

8)Do you have acquaintances who have deserted or evaded the draft? How can we in Czechoslovakia help them?

I know people who have illegally fled the country, and I have many acquaintances and friends in Ukraine who are hiding from the army and conscription. Perhaps, over time, it will be necessary to create initiatives to help such people within the framework of anti-war Ukrainian movements abroad, which have only just begun to emerge. If such initiatives appear, I hope that there will be people in the Czech Republic and Slovakia who will want to help these Ukrainians.

9)What message would you give to Ukrainian and Russian workers at home and abroad?

The only thing I want to convey to those who are not part of the privileged classes (and this is not only the proletariat), regardless of their nationality and location: never trust those who build their happiness on your exploitation, marginalisation and systemic discrimination, and especially do not be fools and do not participate in their wars, it is simply stupid!

10)Thank you for the interview and if you have anything else to say, we would be happy to.

Thank you, comrade, for interviewing me.

Please see my Facebook page for more: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100013291847024

Martin (CAS)

AnarCom Network

https://abolitionmedia.noblogs.org/?p=13566

#anarchist #antiMilitarist #desertion #europe #russiaUkraineWar #ukraine

abolitionmedia
I Would Prefer Revolutionary Internationalism

A response to Wayne Price’s ‘Should Anarchists Defend Ukraine? A Response to Bill Beech’ in Black Flag, Autumn 2024, Vol4.

‘The struggle for class and self-liberation is not to be compared with national conflicts. It is the function of the impersonal State to squander lives in war, or of a superior class to regard lesser humans as expendable; thus any war of the nation-state must in itself be in the nature of an atrocity. […] [C]ompared with other conflicts, social liberation is the most difficult of all to achieve, beside which national liberation is a divertissement. For class struggle implies not merely collective action but the breaking down of that sequence of events ingrained in our society as command-and-obey. Any form of social protest may be useful as an attempt to destroy this sequence, which saps the lifeblood of mankind and makes it possible for the few to govern the many.’

The Floodgates of Anarchy – Stuart Christie & Albert Meltzer

To those who read the pages of Black Flag, it will be clear from Wayne Price’s response to my essay ‘War on Anarchism’, that his arrogance can only be matched by his ignorance.1 It is hard to debate someone who is fully committed to remaining ignorant and who persistently avoids any discussion of specifics, while retreating into abstract slogans and idealistic positions. In response to the many facts I present and the 48 footnotes, Wayne Price offers a stale reference to Bakunin, an oblique reference about Ukrainian anti-semitism (to quarrel with an argument I didn’t make), and a reference TO HIMSELF, Wayne Price. He also gives a potted history of Ukrainian struggle for national self-determination, which is as vague, as it is emotive. And makes a baseless claim that Nestor Makhno was a nationalist. It’s clear that Price and the Natopolitans2 are much more comfortable in the giddy heights of abstract, ahistorical, non-factual idealism, than the blood and piss and vomit of the Ukrainian trenches, or the realpolitik of inter-imperial conflict. Or the realities of class struggle.

Because he doesn’t dare touch the facts, Price quarrels with points I haven’t made, such as Ukraine being a hotbed of anti-semitism, that I subscribe to a Russian view that Ukraine has no right to exist, or that the lesser evil in this conflict would be to support Russian imperialism against NATO. None of them are positions I hold, so there is no need to defend them. What Price doesn’t and cannot engage with are the points I do make: about the origins and causes of the war, about the nature and course of it, its ongoing realities.

I will comment on a few of Price’s arguments before outlining as precisely as I can the ideological differences between the Natopolitan-defencist-nationalist position on one hand and the antimilitarist-defeatist-internationalist position on the other. For those who want to skip to the summary, see the last section below.

The Final Crusade

Let’s start with the anti-semitism question, since it is a common refrain and since it is of some interest. Also, it is worth considering, since Wayne Price was at pains to introduce it into the debate. Considering that in the last year, we’ve heard the most monstrously grotesque imperialist and racist excuses for Zionism shielded by charges of anti-semitism, I am greatly tickled that Price chooses to whitewash Ukraine, which is to all intents and purposes the world champion of armed Hitlerian and Banderite folklore.

The ultimate gotcha by the Ukrainian nationalists and Natopolitans is that Zelensky himself is Jewish, so therefore anti-semitism cannot be a strong force in Ukraine. There is as much truth to this, as Obama ushering in an end to racism, as anyone with even the basic interest in the facts will acknowledge. However, how do we explain the fact that this Jewish president led a standing ovation to Yaroslav Hunka, a bona fide Ukrainian Nazi of WWII stature? The simple reason is that Ukrainian fascism’s main enemy is Russianness. It can therefore shelve the Jewish Question until Ukraine has dealt with Russia and its Russian minorities – it is the same principled deferral that Wayne Price advocates: defend the nation, and the revolution comes afterwards.

But while Price is happy to remain a keyboard warrior, the blood-steeped Azov Battalion is touring Europe (its 2024 mini-tour got quite a bit of pushback along the way), spreading their boot-shiny ideas and making links with likeminded individuals and groups. Its founder Biletsky famously stated that Ukraine’s national purpose is to ‘lead the white races of the world in a final crusade… against Semite-led Untermenschen’3 This charming lad was a Maidan ultra, then a fascist paramilitary in the Donbas (trained by NATO on how to operate grenade launchers and other US weapons) who finally graduated to being a member of the Ukrainian parliament. He is but one in a gallery of ghouls that populate the Ukrainian state and para-state formations. For those who want to follow the deep currents of Ukrainian fascism, I would point them to the two blogs of Moss Robeson: Bandera Lobby Blog and Ukes, Kooks and Spooks. There, you can read how Neo-Nazis train Ukraine’s Presidential Brigade, and its top instructor calls Ukrainians slaves that must be weaponized. About Ukraine’s Nazi paganism. About Azov Nazis visiting NATO HQ. About Holocaust denial. About Ukrainian Nazi paramilitaries invading Russia. Etc. etc. etc.

At risk of repeating myself, I want to underline that the point I am making here is not that all Ukrainians are Nazis, or that Ukraine is a Nazi state. What I am saying is that the Ukrainian fascists are playing an oversized role in shaping the Ukrainian national project, that they were directly involved in some of the worst violence of the civil war and that they continue to be the spearhead against everything Russian. They are the sharpest tools of US imperialism because their hatred of Russia and everything Russian is maniacal. To deny the size of this problem (as Price does) is to deny that these people have been strengthened by the post-Maidan governments and by the NATO sponsors of the proxy war with Russia. It is also to deny one of the causes of the war: Russia’s refusal to accept a fascist-friendly regime in Ukraine. Any regime which rehabilitates fascists from WWII4 , which incorporated Nazis into its state and military structures, is unacceptable to the Russian state, this is a simple fact. Especially, if they are to be armed with NATO weapons and could become a station for nuclear missiles. But because we aren’t allowed to understand the motivations of the Russian state, we can only accept the Natopolitan analysis of why Russia invaded (to erase Ukraine!). Therefore Putin is Hitler and this is a cosmic fight to the death, on which there can be no debate. We must abandon all principles in the struggle against Russian fascism and defend the Ukrainian state. The truth is much more dirty and unpleasant: Ukraine is a tool, and every tool must be kept sharp.

The conclusion we should draw is precisely the opposite of Wayne Price’s. He believes that by minimising Ukraine’s fascist problem, we are refusing to play into the Russians’ hands, and we are supporting the ‘democratic’ Ukrainian state which must be defended against imperialist invasion. On the contrary, as anarchists, we must oppose fascism, because it is the enemy of all libertarian principles, because it is the sharpest manifestation of nationalism (and its crybully victimhood), because it is steeped in militarism and fantasies of racial purity.5 It is also the triumph of capitalism and the interests of capital. Ukrainian oligarchs Ihor Kolomoyskyi and Serhiy Taruta are bankrolling the Azov Battalion (and other paramilitary organisations) with the aim of keeping out Russian oligarchs. Their patriotism doesn’t extend to protection from US/EU capital, e.g. the Ukraine ‘reconstruction bank’, which has been set up by BlackRock and JPMorgan Chase to buy up the country cheaply and arrange for concessions to extract its wealth. We compromise ourselves as anarchists and we compromise all that is good in Ukraine, and we give the Russian state a legitimate line of attack, by giving Ukrainian fascism a free pass.6

The danger of Wayne Price’s position which advocates the defence of the nation, is the notion that there is a good nationalism and a good state, which simply and naturally emerges out of opposition to the invader and occupier. Because self-determination can only be achieved and articulated through the nation, and because self-determination precedes anarchist revolution/liberation, anarchism must be deferred until a clear, untroubled national space is secured. The complete imbrication of state and nation is something that passes Price by. He’s an anarchist committed to bolstering a state, only to tear it down. And he is prepared to go rogue, either by state collaboration or collaboration with Nazis, by joining NATO-controlled brigades, for years on end, until Russia is defeated (whatever that means, since Russia holds the world’s greatest nuclear arsenal). Then he will emerge as the anarchist that he is, and by Jove! he will show the Ukrainian ruling class what he’s made of. Only he won’t, because he’s a keyboard warrior, and the Ukrainians and the anarchists will do the dying for him.

The fatherland of the rich

In discussing the ‘national question’ and the problems of self-determination, Rosa Luxemburg proved more of an anarchist than Wayne Price or his quote from Bakunin. Her pamphlet from 1909 boldly states:

In a word, the formula, ‘the right of nations to self-determination,’ is essentially not a political and problematic guideline in the nationality question, but only a means of avoiding that question.7

Luxemburg holds fast to the class struggle, and refuses to be blindsided by floating notions of freedom and self-determination. The nation is an instrument of class rule, national rights are expressed by the ruling class, they are expressed through ruling class interests, which come at the expense of the working class. Put simply: ‘In a class society, “the nation” as a homogeneous socio-political entity does not exist.’8

And, in a spicy retort to anarchists, she defends the class struggle:

In this case, as in many others, anarchism, the supposed antagonist of bourgeois liberalism, proved to be its worthy child. Anarchism, with characteristic “revolutionary” seriousness, accepted at face value the phraseology of the liberal ideology and, like the latter, showed only contempt for the historical and social content of the nation-state, which it set down as nothing else than an embodiment of “freedom,” of the “will of the people,” and of similar empty words.9

If you prefer this stated in an anarchist voice, we can turn to Rudolf Rocker in his big book ‘Nationalism and Culture’ (1933) – the content is broadly the same:

It is, therefore, quite meaningless to speak of a community of national interests; for that which the ruling class of every country has up to now defended as national interest has never been anything but the special interest of privileged minorities in society secured by the exploitation and political suppression of the great masses. Likewise, the soil of the so-called “fatherland” and its natural riches have always been in the possession of these classes, so that one can with full right speak of a “fatherland of the rich.” If the nation were in fact the community of interests which it has been called, then there would not be in modern history revolutions and civil wars, because the people do not resort to the arms of revolt purely from pleasure — just as little do the endless wage fights occur because the working sections of the population are too well off!10

Class struggle traverses every aspect of the nation state, it cannot be shelved in deference to the interests of the ruling class, or some fatherland of the rich. But this is exactly what Price is advocating. He starts by boilerplate libertarian statements, only to throw them all away:

Anarchists oppose their statist ruling classes. In Ukraine, anarchists do not support Zelensky’s party, nor run in elections, nor give any political support to his government. They oppose the government’s austerity policies and its anti-union laws. They do not endorse the conscription laws and the bureaucratic army. But they do not condemn the government and army for fighting against invasion and occupation! With this they can cooperate (so long as they are too weak to overturn the capitalist state).

Who are these anarchists Price speaks of? No example is given. To him ‘anarchists’, like ‘Ukrainians’ are a monolithic, united mass. These anarchists do not endorse conscription (because presumably conscription is slavery), but they also don’t condemn the government and the way it fights (through conscription!). Because they are too weak, these anarchists will and do and should abandon their anarchism, to submit to the ‘capitalist state’ which will lay claim to their bodies and send them to fight in their ‘bureaucratic army’ which they don’t endorse. Because they are too weak to fight the state, they should abandon all class war and submit to the state’s war for its own survival. As if this will increase their capacities for class struggle! Instead it’s much more likely to land them dead in a ditch. But even dead in a ditch, they will have retained their principles of cooperating with a state, as long as they denounce it. In the words of Wayne Price: ‘I would prefer revolutionary internationalism.’ But… the nation comes first.

Near the end of his text, Price upbraids me for not raising the standard of anarchist revolution. He even accuses me of pacifism. The indignity! To be honest, I’d rather be a pacifist committed to creative libertarian forces, than someone who advocates for the pressganging of working class men abroad, in the defence of soil and nation, all the while hiding behind a computer screen. As things stand, we class struggle anarchists aren’t pacifists, we are antimilitarists and internationalists. We understand the state as the mechanism of nationalist command-and-obey which claims the monopoly on violence, enshrines the justness of its wars, and the monopoly on killing machines (from tanks all the way to nuclear weapons). We don’t issue plucky and manly calls for the slaughter of our working class brothers and sisters. In fact, we see this as hopelessly compromised. We see all the politicians, all the nation states and the media and their little Natopolitans baying for hate and industrial murder. We see the racket which is the arms manufacturing and trade and the revolving doors of the military-industrial-political-media complex. We see the global system of imperial domination and economic exploitation by Western states, i.e. the NATO bloc. We see how our states are hard-wired for armed domination, war and genocide. We know the history of NATO wars and US crimes and we work against them. We understand very well that a strengthened state, engaging in war abroad will turn its sights on us domestically, at the first given opportunity.

To rhapsodise about armed revolution when our numbers are small, when our movement is divided by identity politics, separated from the mass of working class people and split by support for statist, nationalist projects like the Ukrainian one, would be unseemly. Moreover, it seems that Price can only think of revolution as an armed uprising, a Maidan-like putsch, which is why he cannot understand that antimilitarism is one of the pillars of social revolution, that undermining the control of the state and disarming it is what anarchists are working for. Until militarism is weakened, discredited and dismantled, the state’s and the nation’s stranglehold on the working class and its free liberatory forces will continue. For Price, antimilitarism is an interesting pastime, perhaps a page from history, perhaps even outside of the domain of revolutionary activity. For us, it is one of the main pillars of working class liberation, because, as Rudolf Rocker says:

War not only affects human nature calamitously in general by constant appeal to its most brutal and cruel motives, but the military discipline which it demands at last stifles every libertarian movement among the people and then systematically breeds the degrading brutality of blind obedience, which has always been the father of all reaction.11

Dreams of Ukrainian Agency

The above quoted passage from Price about cooperation with the government and the army, is the clearest expression of the position of ‘defencism’ which says that the nation comes first, libertarian struggle second. And because the nation – i.e. the Ukrainian ruling class – has allied itself with NATO12 , it is also a Natopolitan defencism. In his response, Price gets exercised about being called a Natopolitan, which surprises me. He openly advocates allying with NATO against Russia. Perhaps a ‘Tactical Natopolitan’ would suit him better and his taste for paradox? Strategically anti-imperialist and libertarian, but tactically a NATO shill.

In the Black Flag issue from Spring of 2023, Price wrote: ‘That they take arms from the Western governments means little – they need arms and where else can they get them?’ In the Black Flag issue from the Autumn of 2024: ‘Is the NATO involvement so great that the Ukrainians cannot be regarded as fighting for their country?’ In typically deceptive language, Price speaks of ‘Ukrainians’, never the Ukrainian state, and of ‘weapons’ instead of complete NATO training-logistics-targetting-command. In this kindergarten world, ‘Ukrainian agency’ is a notion with some currency. Which agency is that? The one that was denied when Boris Johnson was sent to tear up the Istanbul Accords in Spring of 2022? The one that sees NATO deciding on when and where Ukraine should launch its catastrophic offensives, such as Summer of 2023? The one which drives Ukrainian women to fill German brothels?13 What I see is brutal exploitation of a people in the service of NATO interests and with the aim of bleeding Russia, and ideally regime change and Russia’s Balkanisation. And their ultimate exploitation is the cynical use of their country and resources as a NATO proxy. Here, for once, Wayne Price and I agree:

‘Ukrainians, not Americans, or Germans, or French people, are doing the fighting and dying. For them it is not a “proxy war”.’

And therein is the tragedy of the thing: they are cheap meat which the American and European ruling class are using to fight Russia. For keyboard warrior Wayne Price, laying down your life is priceless. And because you are fighting in a real army, for a real nation, that means that your death can never be for the interests of your ruling class and state, which is a client state of US Empire. All is pure in this azure sky.

All is clear for Ukrainian Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov also, who spoke openly about his country being a NATO proxy. He reflected on how Ukraine is defending ‘the entire West’ and how Russia was seen as the greatest threat to NATO:

‘Today, Ukraine is addressing that threat. We’re carrying out NATO’s mission today, without shedding their blood. We shed our blood, so we expect them to provide weapons.’14

That’s the Ukrainian ruling class. Here’s a sample from the British one, from the mouth of the Prime Minister who torpedoed the peace talks in the spring of 2022 and who hosts Ukrainian Nazis in the English Parliament – Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson:

‘Mate, let’s face it. We’re waging a proxy war!’15

Another reason, according to Price, this cannot be a proxy war, is because this is not an inter-imperial conflict. Why then is the US deciding if Ukraine can use long-range weapons to strike into Russia? Why is the whole NATO alliance committed to this war? Hasn’t every NATO war been an imperialist one? It would be an uncomfortable truth exposing interests so large that they cannot be hidden behind the fig leaf of ‘a small country’s struggle for national self-determination’. One final reason the war in Ukraine cannot be understood as a proxy conflict, is that, in that case, Wayne Price and his Tactical Natopolitans would look like US Empire’s useful idiots. But sooner or later they will have to accept the reality, since even Jens Stoltenberg, NATO’s (then) Secretary General has openly spoken of the inter-imperialist origin of the war. He also confirmed that it was the actions of NATO (which Ukraine isn’t a member of), which provoked the Russian invasion. So much for ‘Ukrainian agency’:

‘President Putin declared in the autumn of 2021, and actually sent a draft treaty that they wanted NATO to sign, to promise no more NATO enlargement,’ Stoltenberg told a joint committee meeting of the European Parliament on September 7 [2023]. ‘That was what he sent us. And [that] was a pre-condition for not invade [sic] Ukraine. Of course we didn’t sign that. He went to war to prevent NATO, more NATO, close to his borders. He has got the exact opposite.’16

This is the casus belli, and therein lie the seeds for an end to this war, or a fatal escalation. Far from the question of a few weapons and provisions, the question of NATO is at the heart of the geopolitical and inter-imperialist nature of this conflict. As John Mearsheimer correctly analysed the post-Maidan moment in 2015, it was ever an inter-imperialist competition:

‘The West is leading Ukraine down the primrose path and the end result is that Ukraine is going to get wrecked.’17

That was ten years ago – there is presently no basis or justification for Wayne Price and his Tactical Natopolitans holding the views that they do.

Bitter Pills

Because Price is so thoroughly NATO-pilled, he cannot accept the responsibility of Zelensky’s regime and the Ukrainian state for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian conscripts. To Price, it is all very simple: the invading Russians are killing them and they are to blame – any acknowledgement of the role of the Ukrainian state in the slaughter of the Ukrainian working class betrays what he calls ‘an imperialist mindset’.

But let’s see how a local anarchist group describes this regime which Wayne Price is working for. In their circular from November 11th 2024, the Kharkov-based anarchist group Assembly calls it ‘the agonizing dictatorship in Ukraine’. They report graffiti from the city of Zaporozhye: ‘Zelensky is an executioner’.18 Far from an imperialist mindset, this is the mindset of class struggle. And it is the support for inter-state and inter-imperial war, which is statist, militarist, nationalist, and imperialist.

To give him some due, Wayne Price acknowledges the positioning of the Ukrainian state: ‘The Ukrainian state has leaned toward the Western imperialists against Russian imperialism.’19 But this was to be expected, Price writes, after centuries of Russian domination. Our Tactical Natopolitan is so blinkered that he can’t see that something which is against Russia, isn’t automatically pro-Ukrainian. And like with the question of government and state military collaboration, this is for Price a necessary evil: one ends up in a state army which is part of an imperialist bloc, such is life, we must soldier on ‘for national self-determination’. Nothing stops us from Abracadabra! declaring that as anarchists we oppose imperialism and ‘our statist ruling classes’. It is just that these statements have been made meaningless through our actions. There is no greater support for your ‘statist ruling class’ and imperialism than to offer your body and life for it. And there is no greater hypocrisy than Wayne Price’s which calls for someone else to die in your stead.

The conservative estimate by the capitalist press is 500,000 dead, maimed and missing-in-action Ukrainians.20 The reality is surely much higher, for anyone who has followed the front lines. Since February 2022, three Ukrainian armies have been killed off by the Russian one. This is why young Ukrainian men are being pressganged by Zelensky’s heavies in a desperate bid to send 160,000 more into death’s jaw (this is a target figure they released in November 2024). Ukrainian soldiers are some of the oldest in the world, with an average age of 43 in November 2023, 10 years older than in March of 2022. A battallion commander of the 65th Brigade says:

‘I’m being sent guys, 50 plus, with doctors’ notes telling me they are too ill to serve. At times it feels like I’m managing a day-care centre rather than a combat unit.’21

60,000 cases of desertion have been launched in the courts in the first 10 months of 2024 – the total numbers are surely higher.22 Poorly trained, the soldiers are abandoned in positions which are impossible to defend, such as Vuhledar. Here is what a soldier who deserted from the 123rd brigade said: ‘No one fucking needed Vuhledar.’ It had been reduced to rubble, more than a year ago, he is convinced there was no need to leave those Ukrainian soldiers there. He puts the blame on the Ukrainian army: ‘They’re just killing them, instead of letting them rehabilitate and rest.’ But this is not enough, Ukraine’s overlords (Wayne Price’s spiritual leaders) are demanding from the client state that it lower the conscription age to 18.23 Even those ‘unfit’ for health reasons will no longer be excluded from military registration and will remain in the register.24 If you have a pulse, you are able to offer your life for the nation.

And because Price mentally lives deep in Natostan, he cannot understand that the war, as waged by Russia is an attritional one.25 This is why he makes the claim that the war is ‘stalemated at best’. Apparent small movements of the front lines are interpreted as a stalemate. But the Russian army is following the dictums of Clausewitz who advocated for the destruction of armies and not the conquest of territories:

What do we mean by the defeat of the enemy? Simply the destruction of his forces, whether by death, injury, or any other means—either completely or enough to make him stop fighting. . . . The complete or partial destruction of the enemy must be regarded as the sole object of all engagements. . . . Direct annihilation of the enemy’s forces must always be the dominant consideration.26

This is why the Russians have pursued the strategy of sucking Ukrainians into cauldrons and fire pockets to devastating effect. The killing field near Robotyno, also known as Bradley Square, and the completely impregnable Surovikin Line. Bakhmut. Vuhledar. Chasiv Yar. Avdeevka. Kursk. Over 1000 days the Russians have been destroying scores of Ukrainian men and NATO machines, because they know that Ukraine’s imperial overlords, and cheerleaders like Wayne Price, are forcing them to advance despite the odds, to prove that they are a viable client and demonstrate the investment made in them by taking territory back.

Price quibbles with me quoting Noam Chomsky because he is ‘a philosophical anarchist’, who doesn’t believe or propose a strategy for anarchist revolution. Wayne Price’s strategy for anarchist revolution is to (temporarily!) give up your autonomy and enlist in a NATO proxy army. Chomsky, on the other hand, understands that adding fire to an inter-imperial conflict under the banner of ‘fighting to the last Ukrainian’ is a disaster for any kind of libertarian movement or social revolution there. Chomsky is also aware of the pernicious effect of silencing antimilitarist and anti-imperial voices in our imperial NATO heartlands.27 Of course, Chomsky is a threat to Price’s world view, because for Price, the carrot of (Global) anarchist revolution, like the ultimate threat of (Russian) fascism – are both used to justify whatever he wants: conscription, imperialism, nationalism.

TLDR

To conclude, let’s summarise the position of the Tactical Natopolitans. It is premised on:

denial of the origins of the war (NATO expansion),
denial of the nature of the war (a proxy war), and therefore
denial of US/NATO imperialism, which is supported by
denial of the primacy of class struggle,
under the banner of defending the nation as the ultimate vessel to defend peoples, communities, individuals.

Our position as class struggle anarchists is that this is an inter-imperial conflict, where the working class is being slaughtered, exploited and lied to. Nothing can be gained for the working class or the cause of libertarian revolution by allying ourselves with any of the states or imperial blocs. Such an alliance only weakens our cause and forces, and fatally compromises anarchism.

Lastly, we need to resolutely and completely abandon the idea that the nation is the ultimate vehicle for self-determination and liberation. There is a richness of traditions, experiences, institutions, communities, languages and cultures which exist apart from and despite the nation and the state. This is our libertarian legacy. This is where the wellsprings of anarchy stem from. We should be guided by them, and not by the siren voices of chickenhawkish imperialist ultras like Wayne Price.

1‘Should Anarchists Defend Ukraine? ‘Ukrainian Project’ has recently reached fever pitch. While a large portion of the so-called anarchist movement is offering tactical PR support for NATO and the silencing of everyone else, bullets have also been used. This is a shocking development for ‘democratic’ countries in the West, so used to their superiority. Slovak President Fico was shot by a man who cited the reason for his actions as the outrage over the decision to halt military support for Ukraine. Ryan Routh, who tried to assassinate Trump on a golf course is a Ukraine ultra and seemingly recruited mercenaries for the CIA. He even wrote a NATO-on-steroids daydream in book form: ‘Ukraine’s Unwinnable War: The Fatal Flaw of Democracy, World Abandonment and the Global Citizen-Taiwan, Afghanistan, North Korea and the end of Humanity’, where he ‘clamors for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin, fantasizes about Trump’s assassination as well, and urges the US military to “instigate” a nuclear war with Russia.’ (see the Grayzone report ‘Alleged would-be Trump assassin recruited for Ukraine’s International Legion’). The first round of the Romanian election was cancelled after the anti-NATO candidate Calin Georgescu won. The reason given for why we must protect the Romanian people from themselves was Russian interference via TikTok. Since the Atlanticists have lost grip on war-weary populations via their state and corporate media, they are now working to shut down any dissent elsewhere. In a speech from 2019, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General already foreshadowed what was to come:
Sir Julian King, the EU Commissioner for the Security Union, outlined the tools that the European Union has at its disposal.
NATO’s cooperation with the EU is important because hybrid is not just a military threat.
We have seen a pattern of cyber-attacks against our countries.
Disinformation campaigns.
And attempts to interfere in our democracies.
Many of our countries have suffered from different types of hybrid attacks.
In isolation, we may not always be able to see the connections, the trends and the patterns.
But together, we can connect the dots, and see the bigger picture.
And together, we have the full range of tools to address these challenges.
NATO must remain prepared for both conventional and hybrid threats:
From tanks to tweets.

Libcom

https://abolitionmedia.noblogs.org/?p=13230

#antiMilitarist #europe #imperialism #internationalism #nato #russiaUkraineWar

abolitionmedia
France: Toulouse Métropole Vans Set on Fire Against NATO Base Expansion

Winter City Blues

On the night of December 13 to 14, three vans in Toulouse Métropole were set on fire in the Côte Pavée district.

We live with the cutting edge of war technology. The current choices are clear: to impose an arms industry and the expansion of NATO bases, and also to force a war economy where social precariousness will be the price to pay for the interests of the state.

The expansion of war to all aspects of life is indeed built here. Toulouse is at the top of the podium of war economy poles. An economy that we have made fit into our heads with propaganda and marketing. Western democracy must be saved from the barbarians elsewhere. War as an act of kindness to maintain our beautiful capitalist heritage.
Being twinned with Tel Aviv and hosting a NATO base from the summer of 2025 show the obvious interests of the Toulouse metropolis. To crush in blood any revolt against the capitalist project.

The debts that would justify the budget cuts are part of a very specific governance program. To go into debt in order to be able to restructure and impose increasingly severe social austerity. The budget cuts will have a strange impact on the social field and do not seem to call into question projects such as the third metro line, the Bordeaux-Toulouse high-speed line or an ever more violent security expansion.

The war has embedded everything, our capacities for opposition are still to be imagined.
Solidarity greetings to anyone who wants to listen.

Indymedia Lille, December 14, 2024

https://abolitionmedia.noblogs.org/?p=13134

#antiMilitarist #antiNato #DirectAction #europe #France #toulouse

abolitionmedia

ThyssenKrupp enriches itself through war and genocide

Many are pissed off. Pissed off about the genocide in Gaza. About the bombs on civilians, schools and hospitals. About global military rearmament. About the bloodshed and displacement of millions of people. About the propaganda of “readiness for war” and of a Germany “capable of defending itself”. About arms supplies and the profits of the defense industry. About the project to reintroduce compulsory military service. About automated kills thanks to AI-controlled drone strikes.

Very, very pissed off.

This anger was unleashed yesterday.

Against the ThyssenKrupp war company.

Yesterday, three trucks and a warehouse were set on fire at ThyssenPlastics in Berlin.

Why ThyssenKrupp?

Through its subsidiary “ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS)”, Thysenkrupp earns billions from the construction of warships of all kinds. These include submarines, corvettes and frigates produced in Hamburg, Kiel and Emden. “Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS) is the only supplier of submarines in Germany.

TKMS has been producing Dolphin-class submarines for Israel since 1993. The submarines are equipped with nuclear-capable cruise missiles. In order to be able to launch cruise or ballistic missiles vertically, TKMS has developed the so-called VLS (Vertical Launching System) with which Israeli submarines of the Dolphin class are equipped. Their main area of operation is the Eastern Mediterranean. Here the “Dolphin” submarines built by TKMS constitute Israel’s nuclear second strike capability in the event of an attack.

In 2022, TKMS and Israel signed a new agreement for the production of “Dakar-class” submarines. The contract, worth around 3 billion euros, includes, in addition to the delivery of three submarines, also the installation of a simulator in Israel, logistical support and the supply of spare parts. ThyssenKrupp is investing 250 million euros in its shipyard. The shipyard includes, among other things, the construction of a new ship assembly hall and a plant for the production of fuel cells. Germany is incurring €540 million in costs and has also invested more than €850 million in Israeli companies, including in the military sector, as part of an industrial cooperation program. Charges of corruption have been brought against Netanyahu over the €3 billion deal as Netanyahu’s cousin and private legal adviser, David Schimron, also represented the Israeli proxy for Thyssen-Krupp Marine Systems.

In May 2023, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Atlas Elektronik, a company of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, officially launched their latest joint development for anti-submarine missions. Atlas specializes in the development of AI-powered deep-sea sonar systems and is a company that develops and manufactures integrated sonar systems for submarines, mine search vessels, combat ships, and torpedoes; Israel Aerospace Industries is a wholly owned subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp AG. Israel Aerospace Industries is at the forefront of unmanned systems in the air, land and marine sectors. The world’s first unmanned underwater drone, “Blue Whale”, was developed by IAI for the Israel Defense Forces, and in recent decades, IAI has become a pioneer in the field of land-based robotic systems and unmanned vessels.

The genocide in Gaza shows the reality of AI-based military technologies: tens of thousands of civilians and children dead, injured, traumatized and maimed. ThyssenKrupp benefits from this genocide as well as from other wars.

“Once again we emphasize the urgent need to organize campaigns against the arms industry, war profiteers of all kinds, including those who supply the military machine with food, energy and any other resources. We must not forget the resistance against all national military apparatuses and multinational military coalitions. We must continue to fight against all nation states and all supranational political and economic unions and conglomerates, which demand our lives, our societies, the natural resources and the territories in which we live; against military mobilization and their industry that feeds on the wealth we produce; against the authorities that claim to rule in our name while protecting only capital and the ruling classes; and against everything that allows war to flourish. We recognize here the need to be present and active in a space of public discussion and in the spaces of the anarchist and anti-authoritarian movement in particular.

Beyond the walls of nationalism and war!

No border divides us, no nation unites us!

Stop the genocides in Gaza and everywhere!

Solidarity with all deserters!”

(Call for Transnational Days of Action Against Militarism and Nationalism from the Balkans (1 to 10 October 2024)

[Published in German in https://de.indymedia.org/node/461731 | Translated and published in Italian in https://lanemesi.noblogs.org/post/2024/10/18/attacco-incendiario-contro-lazienda-thyssenkrupp-in-occasione-delle-giornate-dazione-transnazionali-contro-il-militarismo-e-il-nazionalismo-berlino-germania-6-ottobre-2024/]

https://abolitionmedia.noblogs.org/post/2024/10/19/arson-attack-on-thyssenkrupp-for-the-transnational-days-of-action-against-militarism-and-nationalism-berlin-germany/

#anarchist #antiMilitarist #berlin #DirectAction #europe #germany #palestineSolidarity

abolitionmedia

Let’s sabotage their war paths

On the night of October 3 to 4, 2024, we sabotaged the railway tracks from Toulouse in a south-southwest direction. A tag was left nearby “Let’s sabotage their war paths”.

The paths of neoliberal wars cross all countries thanks to the railways.

Imperial war is being built here in Europe. Transport infrastructure is a key basis for its deployment.

The TSI (Transatlantic Security Initiative) as part of its European military mobility programme produced a report in April 2020. The objective is to increase freight capacity and digital connection within and outside Europe. This relationship resulted in new agreements between railway companies and military companies.

This is what is happening in Italy at the moment between Leonardo (an arms company) and the RFI (Italian railway network).

In France, the SNCF boasted of being the first industry invited to the parade on July 14, to honor its participation in the nation’s rearmament effort and its logistical support. It is not the only one, many others are taking advantage of the ongoing devastation, from the arms market to the reconstruction market. The south-western area of Toulouse is home to the SNCF, Thales, Airbus, Safran, and other war profiteers, among others. Symbolically, at least for one day, their workers had trouble getting to work this morning, sorry for the strollers who just wanted to go for a walk.

We answer the call of the 2024 Balkan Anarchist Bookfair: “Invitation to act against militarism and nationalism (1-10 October 2024). During this period, we invite everyone, in their own locality and in their own way, to organize actions against the conditions of war: nationalism, militarism, patriarchy, politics of exclusion, etc. We call for action against the arms industry and the transport of weapons, against all national military apparatuses, multinational military coalitions, and the increasing militarization of our societies. »

Solidarity with all deserters, war resisters, and conscientious objectors
Solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Source: Indymedia Lille

https://abolitionmedia.noblogs.org/post/2024/10/10/toulouse-france-sabotage-of-rail-traffic-to-disrupt-arms-industry-in-solidarity-with-palestine/

#antiMilitarist #DirectAction #europe #France #palestineSolidarity

abolitionmedia

On the night of April 28 to 29, 2024, we carried out an incendiary attack on the Armin Papperger’s property in Hermannsburg, Turnerstr. on the corner of Immenhoop, where an incendiary device was placed on his garden shed. Papperger is CEO of Rheinmetall, one of the big players in the German armaments industry.

Papperger feels at home here in the Südheide. Surrounded by military training areas and not far from the GÜZ combat training center in the Altmark. The Rheinmetall plant in Unterlüß is only a stone’s throw away. This is where thousands of forced laborers worked for the German war economy at the Rheinmetall-Borsig Rheinmetall-Borsig plant for the German war economy. In a region where, after the war where many National Socialists found refuge after the war, including Adolf Eichmann and the murderer of the Adreatinian Caves, Kappler. In a region where in the 1980s and 1990s Nazi military exercises took place regularly. Not far from Papperger’s house is Munster, one of the largest military bases in Germany. He feels safe and well accepted in this environment, including by his friends with whom the hobby hunter occasionally goes stalking. But tonight may have signaled to him that he doesn’t just have friends and that his retreat is not safe.

Rheinmetall is one of the beneficiaries of the so-called turnaround. This can be clearly seen from a few figures: Since 2022, the Rheinmetall’s share price has quintupled; Papperger himself has replenished his share portfolio with Rheinmetall shares several times. In 2023 the Group, which has been promoted to the DAX index, increased its turnover to 7.2 billion euros, with a target of 10 billion euros for 2024. Before February 2022 the annual production of artillery shells was 70,000 units, 350,000 in 2023 and 700,000 in 2024. Following the takeover of the Spanish ammunition company Expal, Rheinmetall sees itself as the the world’s largest manufacturer of artillery ammunition. The groundbreaking ceremony for a new production facility in Unterlüß was attended by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Ukrainian ambassador and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (“Germany must become fit for war”). The new factory is expected to produce 200,000 shells a year.

Papperger is one of the arms managers with a particularly high media presence. The days when the armaments industry suffered from its image are over. In March 2024, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck assured at a meeting of the 20 most important German arms manufacturers: “We need this industry!” Self-confident and offensively, killing machines can now be presented and advertised. And Rheinmetall has other things to offer besides ammunition, of course tanks in particular: the Lynx and Puma infantry fighting vehicles, the Boxer wheeled tank and the Skyranger anti-aircraft tank. For the Leopard Rheinmetall produces the gun barrel. Rheinmetall also stockpiles various old tank types, which have now been sold to Ukraine, complete with ammunition at a hefty profit. But parts production for the US F35 fighter jet is also on offer.

Rheinmetall plans, produces and murders not only on a national framework. The Group employs over 30,000 workers worldwide in 28 countries. A new ammunition production facility is planned in Ukraine and a maintenance plant for tanks is also due to open there in summer 2024. In addition, the production of infantry fighting battle tanks is also planned. There are also plans for an artillery factory and Rheinmetall is developing a completely new type of battle tank. In the USA, Rheinmetall is participating in tenders and is close to winning a 45 billion dollar contract for the successor to the Bradley infantry fighting vehicle. The development of the Russian market is now off the table for the time being. But as recently as 2011, Rheinmetall concluded a contract with the Russian government for the delivery of a training center for the Russian army and saw itself in the role of a pioneer and door opener.

However, the so-called turnaround does not only mean gigantic rearmament and new record profits for the arms industry. It also means a reorientation of the entire society towards war. Politicians from almost all parties are outdoing each other with proposals. The reintroduction of compulsory military service, military education in schools, interlinking research and the military…
The fact that armies and the arms industry are the biggest destroyers of the environment, devour gigantic amounts of resources and, of course, are also the biggest producers of greenhouse gases.

The fight against climate destruction is also the fight against war, the military and the arms industry!
War starts here, let’s stop it here!
Switch off the system of destruction!

Freedom for Daniela!

Strength and luck to all those in hiding from of the radical left and those who agree to militantly attack structures of power!

Source: de.indymedia

Translated by Dark Nights

https://abolitionmedia.noblogs.org/post/2024/05/03/hermannsburg-germany-incendiary-attack-on-armin-papperger-switch-off-rheinmetall/

#antiMilitarist #danielaKlette #DirectAction #europe #germany

A necessary reminder of the rebuttal to militaristic tendencies in the #ABC #Belarus post:

Anarchist antimilitarism and myths about the war in Ukraine

“We anarchists, wherever we live and whatever our language, are in solidarity with exploited people wherever they are and those who live under the terrible conditions of war. We feel it is our duty to support and have solidarity with the civilian and the libertarian voices but not the political parties, governments and the states.”1

This text is an attempt at a critical reflection on contemporary militaristic tendencies in the #anarchist movement. At the same time, it presents #antimilitarist perspectives as a way of coping with the war not only theoretically, but also to practically sabotage it. It is striking how many people claiming anarchism have embraced bourgeois-democratic propaganda with the outbreak of war in #Ukraine and support the war mobilization coordinated by the Ukrainian State. We fully share the concern of anarchists in #Oakland, #SanFrancisco, #NewYork and #Pittsburgh who said in their statement, “We have no desire to hear any more militarist calls for the escalation of inter-imperialist wars among anarchists.” We are pleased that this indignant voice is also being heard from other parts of the world, including the regions of Central and Eastern Europe. The war propagandists try to make this voice invisible, to drown it out, to marginalize it, but it always resurfaces, as this contribution of ours shows.

“A conventional war of fronts between opposing armies (…) is the type of combat that states engage in and, requiring the replication of statist organisational forms, does not co-exist well with revolutionary struggle”, as stated by the group Antagonism2 in one of its analyses. We agree and we want to develop our criticism towards those who support one of the warring parties in this spirit, without however losing sight of the people affected by the war.

Our reluctance to support any type of military and warfare is not a passive moralistic stance. Rejection is also an active involvement in forms of #struggle other than #military, which views problems from a #class one and not a #patriotic, #nationalist or #liberal #democratic perspective. We do not give up support to people who are massacred, traumatized and deprived of their homes by war. We simply don’t share the militaristic #propaganda that passes off engaging in warfare as a constructive way of supporting these people. We do not encourage people not to resist imperialist aggression. But we are warning them that in war, it’s always about fighting against some aggressors while taking side with others and supplying the means for future aggression. That’s why we see the only way out in the transformation of the inter-imperialist war into a revolutionary struggle, i.e. class war.

In this text we try to clarify our arguments by polemically refuting the myths we read and hear when various people comment on the war in Ukraine. Sadly, these myths are fed by some of those who claim to be anarchists. On the other hand, it is gratifying to see that there are also some who share our antimilitarist, internationalist and revolutionary defeatist positions. We quote some of them in our paper to underline the fact that antimilitarism is still relevant today and is not just the outdated view of long-dead anarchist theorists.

You have the power, but we have the night: anti-militarist attack in Hamburg-Altona

How can we act against the wars that are co-financed and supported from here? For example, by attacking the infrastructure that makes these wars possible from here. This is what we did on the night of March 24, 2014 in Hamburg-Altona, setting fire to a company car from Noske-Kaeser.

Noske-Kaeser is one of the most established suppliers of marine equipment. It supplies air conditioning and ventilation systems, protection for the transport of radioactive material, fire suppression systems and other material for submarines and military vessels to the Bundeswehr [German Army], the British Navy, the armies of Israel, South Korea, Australia, France and so on. The company operates all over the world and in the last 50 years alone has equipped and overhauled 200 boats and 81 submarines. Among these, and together with Thyssen Krupp, 50 boats and 6 submarines on behalf of the Bundeswehr. Since 2000, it has also supported the Bundeswehr with war equipment in Kosovo, Turkey, Cyprus, Afghanistan and Mali. In Kiel, Noske-Kaeser provided the armament of 6 ships for the Israeli Navy. The managing director is Thomas Arlit and the operational site is BREDO DRY Docks GmbH in Bremerhaven. All work is carried out there. Noske-Kaeser is jointly responsible for the wars in which Germany, England, Israel, France, etc., are involved.

The Noske-Kaeser has also equipped the largest frigate of the Bundeswehr that has just set sail for the war in Yemen. Another war that NATO is waging and that is portrayed by the media as absolutely devoid of alternatives and controversies. In no uncertain terms, the combat mission in the Red Sea has been named “Prosperity Guardian”.

Let’s fight for anti-militarism, let’s oppose the companies that make millions from exterminations and wars and that enrich themselves on the misery of people, animals and nature. Anti-militarism must take shape in the streets and at night, and must be actively practiced. Words and arguments are not enough for us, so we oppose with deeds war, exploitation and the accumulation of wealth by individuals, which are based on murder and abuse of others and the environment. With all the means at our disposal.

Against all war and for the social revolution.

Freedom for all!

A non-exhaustive cartography of European and Italian support for anarchists in the Kiev army

The slope towards World War III looks increasingly slippery and unpredictable. After the failed counteroffensive of the Ukrainian army, and in anticipation of a probable Russian offensive in the summer, the European Union and the individual states of Western Europe are rushing to accelerated rearmament by increasing the production of ammunition1 in view of an increasingly less unlikely direct involvement. As Romania prepares to host Europe’s largest NATO base, tailor-made for the war on Russia2, several European states (including Germany, Denmark and France) have announced their willingness to strengthen military service or reintroduce conscription3, and some are even calling for a new Pearl Harbor to unite the European home front4. Meanwhile, the attack on Crocus City Hall seems all too apt to provide Putin with an opportunity for escalation5, and the carnage in Gaza is perhaps irreparably shaking the role of the Western bloc as guarantor of democratic values.

In the scenario of the global inter-capitalist war that seems more and more like no return, the urgency of building an international mobilization that knows how to oppose a concrete resistance to the continuation of hostilities and tries to overturn the war of the bosses against the bosses is increasing every day. Yet, in Europe and Italy there are comrades busy supporting Zelensky’s army economically and politically, with solidarity projects that focus on providing military equipment to anarchists and left-wing militants who have chosen to enlist in the ranks of Kiev. It seems useful to us to document some of these bellicose tendencies of the anarchist and antagonistic movement in order to invite all comrades who maintain defeatist and internationalist positions to speak out and to intensify their efforts so that the next breakthroughs of the capitalist conflict do not find us completely unprepared.

The positions taken by various groups of comrades in Eastern and Northern Europe are quite disarming… The so-called “various anarchist groups in Germany” (which, as far as we know, while speaking for everyone, mainly represent the community of anarchists exiled from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus) have recently spoken out against the idea of a ceasefire, since “A ceasefire at this stage will only give Russia some rest and a foothold in the occupied territories”6 (a position reminiscent of the sad militarist turn of the Sixteen: “To speak of peace at this time is to play into the hands of the pro-government German party […]”). In Germany, Holland and Belgium, in squats, the benefits continue (also relaunched in Holland and Belgium by the anarchist federation Vrije Bond7), for Solidarity Collectives (formerly “Operation Solidarity”), a network of volunteers who support “anti-authoritarian fighters” who have enlisted in the Ukrainian army. These fighters are mostly, but not exclusively, part of a detachment known as the “Resistance Committee”8 which is part of the Territorial Defense Forces (i.e. reservists) of the Ukrainian army (and therefore subject to military command structures as much as anarchists who have instead enlisted in the regular army).

On the channels of Solidarity Collectives9 new fundraisers appear at a rapid pace for the purchase of drones, night vision goggles, electronic systems, cars, and other military equipment. To give an example, the campaign to buy a drone was presented with these words: “FPV attack drones are relatively cheap and very effective. Such kamikaze drones have already proven their effectiveness in destroying enemy equipment and infantry and reducing the enemy’s close logistics. They can also partially compensate for the lack of artillery weapons. […] Therefore, we are opening a new section of our team’s work: the assembly of attack UAVs»10. The production of these drones would also be a way to “reinforce anti-authoritarian structures, and an opportunity to demonstrate the possibility of production based on self-management and collective responsibility of workers”11. In short, a hacker response to the shortages in supplies from NATO, while waiting for the European arms industry to start churning out artillery at an adequate pace. The fact that communication at the front is based on the Starlink system, a technology owned by one of the richest single men on the planet, does not seem to be an obstacle: a collection is enough to raise the money needed for a Starlink disk12.

With regard to the causes of the conflict, in its manifesto, Solidarity Collectives firmly denies that NATO activity played a role in the outbreak of the war, which would be entirely attributable to a unilateral desire for imperial expansion of the Russian Federation13. And while the Kiev government’s attempts to procure cannon fodder while avoiding widespread protests among the population are increasingly leaving room for a real manhunt14 (recently we have begun to see videos circulating of forced recruitment in which suspects of reluctance are hunted down the street and thrown into vans to be taken to the front in 48 hours15), we do not find any comment on the channels of Solidarity Collectives and the Resistance Committee. No words to say for those who have no intention of dying for their country, no word on the protests of those who demand that their loved ones be demobilized after almost two years of service at the front practically without interruption16. On the contrary, Solidarity Collectives points out that “many Ukrainian men and women, including our comrades, have joined the armed units voluntarily and knowingly.” This fact (which we do not doubt), if given without mentioning the estimate of more than 650,000 men of conscription age who would have left the country since the beginning of the conflict17, becomes war propaganda18. As the initial inspiration that convinced many to take up arms (and the signs are many) wears off, it will become clear to most that the state and its army could not defend them in the war except at the price of enslaving them and sending them to slaughter. The silence that these comrades are maintaining about forced conscription will no longer hold. What will they say then? How will they be able to distance themselves from the executioners they have supported?

And if Solidarity Collectives claims that support for the Ukrainian “resistance” does not imply support for government policies, it is also clear what the chain of command is: if the individual unit of ex-militant fighters can afford to make decisions by consensus, the enlisted vegan anarchist has no problem admitting that, at the level of the relationship with other units, there is a military hierarchy, since “we are in the army”19. And if for now relations with the Nazis do not create problems (there is only one in the battalion, and he has understood that “we are all in the same boat”, so he shares his practical knowledge with the anarchists), Solidarity Collectives says it is ready to oppose the “authoritarian tendencies” in post-war Ukraine. It is a pity that these “tendencies” are already largely unfolding, favored by the war itself20, as they themselves record: “Social and economic conditions are worsening because of the war. Unfortunately, the state responds with neoliberal reforms, deregulating labor relations and removing social protections. […] Ukrainian trade unions could resist all this. Yet, many members of the trade unions are currently serving in the Ukrainian army, and the unions are directing their efforts primarily to supporting their members at the front and their families. Aware of the disastrous consequences for the Ukrainian proletarians of the fact that the unions have put the struggle against their bosses on the back burner in order to wage war on the side of the bosses, the not a little surreal conclusion is to support the militarist turn of the unions: “That’s why we try to do what we can to support trade unionists serving in the military and their military units.” On the fantasy of being able to reconcile membership of the army with the feminist and ecological struggle, it seems appropriate to overlook.

In the face of these tendencies, Malatesta’s response to the interventionist manifesto of the Sixteen remains incredibly topical for us. In two pages of his typical crystalline prose, Malatesta argued that the only course of action of anarchists “traced by the very logic of their aspirations” is to oppose the war of the capitalists with the social revolution, and that it can only be a failure to ally oneself with one’s own bourgeoisie, thinking in this way to protect oneself from a greater danger. And it is particularly sad that the very historic magazine Freedom in which Malatesta published these theses in 1916 has given space in recent times to materials that we would not be able to define except as sinister warmongering propaganda, such as the letter (later removed from the site) from the sniper asking for military equipment and recounting: “I enlisted in the Ukrainian infantry as an assault pioneer the day after the full-scale invasion began. Why? I didn’t spend any particular time thinking about why. Maybe it was a sense of freedom. Freedom drove me to fight.”22 The magazine in which Malatesta’s unequivocal conclusion appeared: “Today, as always, our cry is: Down with the capitalists and the governments, all the capitalists and all the governments” now publishes Darya Rustava’s slippery arguments on bad and less bad nationalisms23, and Zosia Brom’s positions of indulgence towards Western imperialism as a bulwark against Russian imperialism24 (“When you say ‘Fuck NATO’ or ‘Stop NATO expansion’, what I feel is that you don’t care about the safety and well-being of my friends in Eastern Europe.”) It is interesting to note that on both the pages of Freedom and Organise (organ of the English Anarchist Federation) the question is often posed in terms of westsplaining. Western anarchists would be incapable of listening to local anarchists and would have the arrogance to want to explain reality from their pulpit, wielding the principles of anarchism with rigid orthodoxy: a tried and tested rhetorical stratagem to force the anti-militarists to give in to the shame of their “privilege” and adopt warmongering positions that, by the way, are not at all representative of either Eastern Europe, nor Ukraine26.

Before arriving in Italy, let’s briefly mention “Gnip”, an acronym for “Good night imperial pride”. Gnip defines itself as an anarchist collective that supports anarchist and anti-authoritarian fighters in the Ukrainian army, with fundraising mainly for military supplies, and remembers Maidan as the “revolution of dignity”27. GNIP has relaunched, as well as Solidarity Collectives, the demonstrations that were held in Berlin, Warsaw and Zurich, Vilnius, Tbilisi, Barcelona and Vienna on 24 February on the occasion of the second anniversary of the Russian invasion28. These demonstrations featured anarchist excerpts with the slogans “fragile peace breeds more war”. The anarchists aligned with the state, in addition to asking NATO to supply more weapons to the Kiev army, have no choice but to correct the language: if you are no longer against the state – a fact, since you support those who fight in the ranks of the state army – you can still be against empires. Hence the “anarchists against empires” appear, declaring no longer “death to the state” but “death to the empire.” The goal is to “destroy empires and dictatorships”, states, it seems, can be saved.

In Italy, the work and militarist positions of Solidarity Collectives have been disseminated in particular by the magazine Malamente and by the book published by the publishing house of the same name, Qui siamo in guerra. Already in 2022, an interview that appeared in Malamente reported the position of a member of Solidarity Collectives that Ukraine’s victory on the ground would be the only tactic to ensure the survival of a leftist movement in the country. Zelensky’s victory would be indispensable in an anti-fascist strategy to counter the Ukrainian ultra-right (since Zelensky “is not a Nazi”), to avoid the risk of a Ukrainian revanchism in the event of defeat and to prevent the credit for a possible victory from going all to the far right… 29 One wonders what is useful in an anti-fascism that renounces the revolutionary effort in favor of an inter-class defense of the democratic state in order to preserve the minimum room for maneuver granted by the neoliberal regime. And in the event of an unlikely positive outcome to the conflict, how can we not imagine that the nationalist components and the state as a whole will instead be strengthened? And how can we not imagine the possible disastrous consequences of a revanchism on the other side of the front? This anti-fascism, as Simone Weil wrote, succumbs to the absurdity of wanting to “fight a barbaric tyranny by crushing the peoples under the weight of an even more barbaric massacre.”

Other ideas in reference to Solidarity Collectives, but not only, come from two articles that appeared in the latest issue of Malamente (March 202430). In the first article, Vittorio Sergi interviews Ludovico, founder of the Giuditta Rescue Car project, which has brought humanitarian aid to Ukraine in connection with the Solidarity Collectives network. “Many comrades in Western Europe view with suspicion this practice of financially supporting fighters who are nevertheless part of a state army supported with considerable funding by NATO states. Why do you think it makes sense to contribute financially to the equipment of volunteer fighters, anarchists and the Ukrainian left?” asks Vittorio. “Then there are so many reasons. The first is that war costs […]. The front is very large and therefore being able to cover every need on the part of the State is in any case complicated […]” (emphasis ours). The role of “solidarity” is therefore, declaredly, to cover the holes in state supplies, to reach where NATO supplies do not arrive, by procuring drones, tablets, protections, and other equipment that the army does not provide, in perfect agreement with the banner that appeared in Barcelona on the anniversary of the Russian invasion in which the circled A is that of “Arm Ukraine”. And there is good news for the bearers of that banner: while shipments of uranium secretly crossed the Po Valley on Trenitalia trains heading to the front31, the EU allocated another 5 billion euros for military aid to Ukraine in 202432, billions that will further contribute to galvanizing the war industry of the member states. In passing, in Ludovico’s story, the episode of a forced recruitment of one of the volunteers linked to Solidarity Collectives is mentioned. But apparently, criticism of forced conscription does not shake confidence in the army and in the fact that “Ukrainians are defending Ukraine.” And while a massive wave of recruitment is expected to obtain half a million new soldiers, a petition calling for a “more equitable” mobilization in which deputies and administrative staff are also sent to the front would give hope.

Also financing the Giuditta Rescue Car project, and supporting an elusive “anarchist and transfeminist resistance” is the Camillo Berneri Anarchist Club of Bologna, which also attached the name of its patron, an ardent anti-militarist, to an off-road vehicle handed over to the snipers of the Foreign Legion, and baptized “Camillo, in honor and in the historical commitment of Camillo Berneri, an Italian anarchist”33 before being sent to the front. If history now offers no lessons but only symbolism and lineages that can be assembled at will, then the anarchists in Zelensky’s ranks can disturb the faces of Bakunin and Makhno to obscure their faces, or they can be safely compared to the Arditi del Popolo and the partisan armed struggle34 (on the arbitrariness of these juxtapositions, We refer to other texts35,36).

In the second interview, Vittorio Sergi asks Xsenia, a volunteer in the solidarity initiatives of an artistic collective active in Ukraine, for a comment on the attack by fascists on David Chichkan, known for his anarchist positions. “This situation drives me crazy because I didn’t expect it. […] Before the war, it was very popular to go to Odessa and get in touch with the artist community. Because there is the sea and near the sea the art world is quieter and you can concentrate better on practicing. So yes, for me, as for the artists in the Odessa community, it was a real shock […]”. But this is reduced as tiredness: “The war was very long and not everyone can manage their emotions well” and fascist tendencies are explained in terms of “mental conflicts”. In short, the city where Ukrainian neo-Nazis massacred dozens and dozens of ethnic Russians who had taken refuge in the House of Trade Unions (several of whom died in a fire set to the building or by jumping from the windows to save themselves from the fire) is a quiet seaside place to relax and make art. Now, we are not interested in lashing out against what we think is Xsenia’s naivety, but rather in pointing out the removal (which seems significant to us) from the memory of such a tragic and recent event (it was just 2014) and the ease with which this account is published without any critical or contextual note on the part of the editors.

This brief report ends here. The future seems intent on making it necessary for us to give more and more material concreteness to our positions, even here in Europe. It is therefore essential to clear the field of the anarcho-militarist fever that has infected various groups of comrades even in our latitudes, and to reaffirm that the only possible position for anarchists remains the defeatist and internationalist one, against the enemy in our own country, against every state but starting from “ours”, and therefore for us against the Italian state. against the EU, against NATO. The only war we have is the social war, against capitalism, against its wars, against its peace.
