I took a (minor) chance on this Bruel & Kjaer bandpass filter. It was super cheap. Turns out the previous owner had left the batteries in it, and they were a corroded mess. The plastic battery compartment was also broken.

It does have a connection for a power supply on the back, so one option would be to find one of those. There was some corrosion on the componetry inside, though, so it may not be worth the effort.

Sad face. ☹️

A bruel & kjaer bandpass filter type 1621 sits in a music studoi. It has a square face and is off white. It had three black dials on the face and one switch.

The lifespan of electronics is seldom > 13 years—even if stored & unused. I’ve come up with 2 strategies for myself to reduce costs/waste with music equipment.

1. Software is cheaper than hardware, & companies often allow you to install from an old machine to a new machine. Focus on software tools! Computers are more repairable than other audio hardware.

2. Modularize your studio with lots of inexpensive hardware, rather than a single expensive device.

This is a music studio equipment appreciation post.

I've been acquiring old 1970s test equipment lately, stuff that was never intended to be used to make music (I blame Hainbach, look him up on YouTube).

I recently got a pulse generator (the unit on the right). Syncing it to the function generator on the left gave me a way to create these gritty, punchy lofi non-standard rhythms. You might call them glitchy.

They sound so good. That's it, that's the post. 🙂

Well, I think I finished all the recording and mixing a couple of days ago. I need to nip out to the shops but I've got another studio afternoon planned. I'll be listening through everything, making any necessary tweaks, leave it all alone for a bit and do it all again (rinse and repeat). I've also started to think about the artwork.
I really meant to toot and progress since the start of writing last September but never had the wherewithal (spoons)
