Landlords do not provide housing, they actively make it more scarce by hoarding a strained resource people need to survive. To any extent they may perform a service they are doing so with YOUR income and then just skimming a hefty profit off the top to sit around and own the place. Think of everything your landlord has EVER done for you, then add up how much sum total you've paid them and ask yourself if this system makes sense
