13 if human civilisation is still technologically advancing in a couple of hundred years we will realise sending naked selfies and maps to our solar system off into the galaxy in different directions was PROBABLY a mistake and considerable effort will need to be expended to go out and discretely collect those #DarkForest

#DarkForest poll

by the time the voyager probes have traveled far enough to encounter potential threats in our galaxy, and give our location away, human civilisation will be:

@ksaj @nuxi @amszmidt Yep. The #DarkForest hypothesis is not a cheerful thing indeed. I remember playing with the simulation a whole night and not getting any more good-humored. Still I have no idea if it is really a realistic model. I so wish it isn't, but looking at our known space in the universe does not contribute to any optimism whatsoever 😭

So it's probably better to look at the flocking models instead 😀

Kissane's masterful essay inspired me to hope again. It is up to us to shape Mastodon, or something like it, into something that unleashes the #love that so inspired Mike Davis's life of activism and humanity.

With 3 Body Problem getting a lot of attention with the two TV series...

#DarkForest problem is something I believe could happen here on Earth if there is further abandonment of compassion for strangers education. The threat of #DarkForest is the technology to attack remotely and wipe out in #OutGroupHate - and humanity may develop new physics weapons to kill remotely very easily. It is a #FaithSystem value - #ArmsRace of violence / killing.

Following up, I’ve settled on a basic premises, to create acceptable spell casting, I think you kinda have to allow for ancient alien artefacts that make it possible. Ancient aliens are a staple in most hard SF(not just the Hysterical channel), especially in ones that explore the #darkforest hypothesis. Not that I’m limiting myself to existing tropes, but I like the way this feels. I like it when ideas “click” into place, a bit like Lego, and this does it for me.
