Today is #WorldHeritage Day - or more correctly, the "International Day for Monuments and Sites (IDMS)".

Celebrated since 1982 on April 18, this is an opportunity to reflect on our common shared #CulturalHeritage, what needs to be done for its protection and to celebrate #culture together with diversity in unity.

There are 100s of events around the world, which can be found through local & regional chapters of @UNESCO & @ICOMOS

The Australian World Heritage List has 20 places, including entries like "Australian Convict Sites" that actually encompass 11 places in Australia like:

- "Port Arthur Historic Site" (visited),
- "Cockatoo Island" (visited), and
- "Fremantle Prison (former)" (yet to visit).

So there are really 39 individual world heritage listed places to explore in Australia.

I've also visited 32 out of 123 *national* heritage listed places in Australia.

It is unlikely I will ever visit the penguins at Heard and McDonald Islands, but one can dream.

There are more than 1,000 sites inscribed on the #UNESCO #WorldHeritage List - places of extraordinary beauty and importance.

It is easy to overlook the importance of preserving our collective #CulturalHeritage, which is integral to our identity and our sense of #history. Especially in times of war, so many of them are destroyed or in danger.

We need to safeguard them for future generations and protect our shared heritage for the benefit of all.

#Doorsday's child has far to go ... all the way to #Córdoba in fact.

This is a lovely old #door from the Mosque-Cathedral or #Mezquita with details of #MoorishArchitecture. In fact, it's one of the oldest surviving gates of the former mosque! The door's decoration dates back to 855 when it was known as Bab al-Wuzara ("Viziers' Gate). Lots of Al-Andalus state officials used to enter the mosque here. The Great Mosque of Córdoba was converted into a Catholic #cathedral in the 13th century. It's a World Heritage Site since 1984.

Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio and Australian surfer Mick Fanning are calling on Australia's government to shut down industrial salmon farms in a World Heritage area. These farms have been linked to the rapid decline of an endangered native fish, the Maugean skate. DiCaprio and Fanning urged their social media followers to help save the Maugean skate and prevent the extinction of this unique species while protecting the wilderness from destruction. #SaveTheMaugeanSkate #StopSalmonFarming #ProtectWilderness #EndangeredSpecies #Conservation #Tasmania #WorldHeritage #LeonardoDiCaprio #MickFanning

The majestic Perito Moreno Glacier extends into Argentino Lake, surrounded by rugged snow-capped mountains and endless forests and trees. It is a combination of a harsh, cold environment softened by a cluster of flowering trees in the foreground.

Night photography in the historical center of Paraty (RJ, Brazil). With high tide the sea water floods the streets and reflects the colorful colonial style buildings.
The name "Paraty" means "river of fish" in the Tupi language, spoken by the native Guaianás Indians which populated the region. The Portuguese who colonized the region took over the name for their town.
Paraty is located on the Costa Verde (Green Coast), a stripe of Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest) that runs along the coast line south of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The historic center of Paraty and several areas of the atlantic rainforest were inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019.

I call it a dancing tree of life

It is a classic shot of one of the main entrances to Ta Prohm Temple, but sometimes cliché becomes iconic.

The Ta Prohm is somehow most known for its tall trees and solid root system entangled in the buildings structure.

But it is also one of the more challenging temples to explore, because the structure itself, the park around it and the entrance gates. The area is so filled with interesting details and unexpected turns and ideas. This is one of the temples worth spending some time studying.

Ta Prohm (Khmer: ប្រាសាទតាព្រហ្ម, "Ancestor Brahma") is the modern name of the structure. Originally it was called Rajavihara (Khmer: រាជវិហារ, "royal monastery"). It was built during the reign of Jayavarman VII, the great ruler who is known for Bayon, the final version of Angkor Thom city and other massive social public works like hospitals and safe guesthouses all over the realm.

It was a monastery and university, build to honour the kings mother, with the gates honouring his brother and his guru. At the peak of its operation, 12 500 people lived within Ta Phrom temple complex and appx 80 000 lived in villages around it, supporting the institution.
