No Khmer food tonight. My wife makes restaurants obsolete. Such good stuff she cooks. Honestly rarely eat Cambodian food at home. This was super good. Bbq chicken on Khmer wood grill, potatoes and broccoli no leftovers.

I call it a dancing tree of life
It is a classic shot of one of the main entrances to Ta Prohm Temple, but sometimes cliché becomes iconic.
The Ta Prohm is somehow most known for its tall trees and solid root system entangled in the buildings structure.
But it is also one of the more challenging temples to explore, because the structure itself, the park around it and the entrance gates. The area is so filled with interesting details and unexpected turns and ideas. This is one of the temples worth spending some time studying.
Ta Prohm (Khmer: ប្រាសាទតាព្រហ្ម, "Ancestor Brahma") is the modern name of the structure. Originally it was called Rajavihara (Khmer: រាជវិហារ, "royal monastery"). It was built during the reign of Jayavarman VII, the great ruler who is known for Bayon, the final version of Angkor Thom city and other massive social public works like hospitals and safe guesthouses all over the realm.
It was a monastery and university, build to honour the kings mother, with the gates honouring his brother and his guru. At the peak of its operation, 12 500 people lived within Ta Phrom temple complex and appx 80 000 lived in villages around it, supporting the institution.

Aan alle Nederlanders die ook naar Wie is de Mol? kijken: ik was afgelopen April ook in Siem Reap, en was natuurlijk ook diep onder de indruk van Angkor Wat.
Wat ook indruk maakte: het Apopo Visitor's center. Cambodia ligt vol met onontplofte bommen en mijnen, die nog elke week slachtoffers maken. Cambodia is dan ook een van de landen met het hoogste percentage mensen die één of meerdere ledematen missen.
APOPO traint ratten ("Hero Rats") om onontplofte explosieven te detecteren. Mensen en honden zijn te zwaar, maar ratten zijn licht genoeg om de explosieven niet te activeren bij het speuren.
De ratten werken max 6 dagen per week en max 90 minuten per dag, in de ochtend, als het nog relatief koel is.
Toen ik daar was, was APOPO al zo'n 20 jaar in Cambodja actief. Ik vroeg hoeveel explosieven ze in die tijd onschadelijk hadden gemaakt: zo'n 90 000 (als ik het me goed herinner). Toen vroeg ik hoeveel er naar schatting nog opgeruimd moeten worden? Nog zo'n 2 miljoen(!)
Ze kunnen dus nog wel wat hulp gebruiken. Ik heb gedoneerd.

Well not much to say. My wife sends me off for dinner. Tells me be sure to eat. I think it means beer too. Right? Viva always welcomes me with $0.75 beers. I need all this pampering.
When the coffee reaches 50% done. I start considering where I wanna walk. Not that I end up where I think. #today it seems I have even less of an idea. So I look at photos. Some old. Some different. See what you think.
First one is from a recent trip to Angkor Wat after I got my free pass to enter. The free pass is available to barang that live here two years and can show retirement visas. Khmer people get in for free. The pass is not good at all temples. When we visited Preah Vihear I had to pay $15 for a day visit. Worth it to see Koh Ker temple.

#today back to LaLatte coffee. Always warmly greeted by owner. Rock music goes often here. Very eclectic mix of music and changing furniture. One thing does not change is the wonderful coffee and service.
These places make life so nice. Work is so much like play. Well not work. I just spend my days wanting the simplest existence possible. My wife helps. Weather is particularly nice for the morning walk.
I have so many favorite coffee places here. Today it looks like this.
Out walking today. Flowers on a truck. This guy drives all around neighborhoods and businesses selling the flowers. Seen a similar one close to our house. My wife loves this stuff here. Very different buying here. When I lived in Hanoi the morning always started with the lady selling mangos on her bicycle. I bought some once and after she would stop by our apartment and I could hear her saying hello in vietnamese. Fun times. Nice flowers. Good mangos too.
Good morning from Siem Reap river. #today we get ready to go to Phnom Penh tomorrow. Beautiful days these days. Will go see acquaintance for coffee. It's our every 3 months me listen to him talk festival. First enjoying the quiet and river. Don't claim to be much of a talker. Or listener. I just fake it

#today I had to leave the house for reasons. So I wandered on down to downtown Siem Reap. Along the river are street food stalls. I know a few of them. Today I had beef with brocolli and steamed rice with a 7up. It cost me $3. I could have gotten the fried rice with chicken but I did not want more rice. That would have been $1.50. Red Plastic table and chair ambiance no extra price :-)
Down the street. With blue skies. I just go. Shopping is fun but I am no good at it. So I look in windows. Now I just walk. Left and right. No matter. Restless yet serene. Isn't that life. Feels like it today. Stop one more time. At the wonderful Noi Cafe. A place to sit and write and drink iced Americano in their comfy chairs. Puzzle the eternal puzzle. Find words for some journal. Feel the cross between anguish and fulfillment. Life is strange. It's what we got. So I just live it.

Walking around wat bo district #today. One of my favorite places. Today was a beautiful cool day. Just took left and right turns where I wanted after morning coffee. Best kind of walking here ever. This city is just the perfect size for wandering around.
That's it. gonna leave at 530 for some beer at beatnik bar. I think all is okay with me going. My wife said go have some fun. Been going there for years. its changed but not. Before the pandemic they had some nice burgers there. Now no food. It still has this eclectic mix of people I enjoy. it is almost at pub street so tourists walk by it on their way to the lights and big time places. Just around the corner is viva! restaurant. Another hangout where the beer is $0.75. I remember the days in Phnom Penh along the riverwalk when draft beer was $0.50. I would lay down $2 and it would last awhile :-). Now we don't go to Phnom Penh too often. See you when i toot the beer. And drink it too.

#today stopped at regular coffee stop and it's changed completely. More tables. All new inside. Very bright and pretty. Star Coffee reinvented. Love it.
One of the nicer things here after being able to show residency for two years is to get a free Angkor Wat pass. This entitles me to enter the temple complexes for free as often as I want. It expires every year so I must do the simple and free online request along with passport and visa photos. This weekend I plan on visiting my favorite Angkor Temple. Bayon with the smiling faces. Thank you Cambodia.
