Really excited to go to an #Aikido seminar with Vu Ha sensei this weekend at Tenzan Aikido in Seattle!
Vu Ha has really crisp and clear aikido, and I can see Kanai style influences in it, which feels right at home for me, as my senseis also studied under Kanai sensei.
Of course, Vu Ha also brings in other stylistic influences, to keep things interesting!
I predict being tired in such a good way...

guys, here is a question -
how old do you think you should be to still be able to do the strength training?
and particularly to do the arm balances or other calisthenics?
what could motivate you to workout?
(i think the fear is the strongest motivation)
what's your thoughts in general about aging and being able to workout?
- do you think you can be too old to workout or is it okay at any age?
- and what kinds of workouts at what age is ok?
- what do you think about martial arts and how good or bad they are to get fit? (i think some kinds do not work for this goal but may make you feel better mentally. also for some kinds you need to train strength and stretch additionally to be better in it)
(and.. how old do you think I am?)
join the abs party, btw !
six pack beautifies people a lot better than brilliants!!

People from the martial arts community - particularly #Aikido - who may be aware of Shu-Ha-Ri (and that will be a minority, because it definitely falls into the 'esoterica' category) might be surprised to find that the term has become adopted by certain parts of the Agile software development methodology community to describe something akin to the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreyfus_model_of_skill_acquisition
This is almost entirely due to Alistair Cockburn pushing a modification of the concept as a part of his particular flavour of Software Development Methodology in the late '90s then called Crystal, but now evolved into something he calls 'The Heart of Agile'.
@monospace Yes, I teach #Aikido (mostly Tamura-ha) and #Taijiquan (mostly traditional Yang style).
I also have a background in Iaido, Jodo and...
This is the first English language reference I have found for Shu-Ha-Ri, and is I believe the link that made it's way into the Agile movement via Alistair Cockburn in the late 90s via nntp and various mailing lists related to software methodology at the time, that I may have inadvertently been a catalyst for.
@field94Mop @Ryushinkan I don't personally view the hakama as a show-off item. I just like the feel of it and flow of it, the aesthetics. I'd be fine if anyone could wear it, regardless of grade.
Though it would be nice to go back to having more colour variation in #aikido! It's not really forbidden to wear other colours (at least in our organisation), but everyone just defaults to black or indigo.
Is there anyone who does #iaido or #koryu #kenjutsu who would recognise the chiburi from this kata (#AikiToho by #aikido sensei #Nishio)?
I’m not sure how well the hive mind on Mastodon will work but I’ve been looking for the answer for some time. Some charts list it as a chiburi from #SuioRyu while others don’t. High ranking people from Suio Ryu didn’t recognise it. A practitioner of Aiki Toho stated error in table. But I haven’t been able to link to any other school.

@ElusiveConfection i can't recommend #aikido enough if you're looking to find a peaceful way to live in this world. and everything you do in aikido with your hands can be done with a tanto or sword as well. it's way fun i really wish i trained more when i was younger, i was a student at a very prestigious dojo lead by one of ueshiba's uchi dechi (a student that lived in Hombu Dojo with other students) and I didn't take advantage enough of that. cc: @Binder

Last week we had two gradings, Leena Lehti (3rd kyu) and Tuomo Mäkelä (5th kyu). Congratulations to both! In the Finnish #Aikido tradition a practitioner can start wearing a hakama at 3rd kyu, which Leena is eagerly looking forwards to.
So today we were teaching some lukio students (upper secondary education) self defence techniques from the #aikido perspective. Fun, though a bit chaotic at times :D
#3goodthings #ThreeGoodThings
1) Inching closer to when I can start #Aikido again - and also enjoying my gym workouts. Was doing Aikido up to 4x per week, and need to decide how I will move forward from next month. Luxurious problem.
2) Soup for dinner tonight used up a lot of leftovers!
3) Got one of the tardy papers graded and off my plate for now. (Needs revision.)
So we offer this #Aikidō training for families. Essentially parents can come with their children (usually one parent, one or two children) and do some exercises together (20% Aikidō, 80% game or fitness). Compared to kids training, parents take responsibility of their children (we are not educated teachers). Compared to the training for adults, it is less demanding and more playful.
It is so fascinating to see parents interact with their children. There are parents, which are focused on learning/performing well themselves and children just follow their lead. There are parents which struggle with the exercises themselves, but keep telling their children how they are supposed to do it. And there are parents which get in the way of their children making their own experiences. It is so interesting to observe human behavior.
And of course this situation can be transferred to Aikidō camps for adult training as well. So many people give unsolicited advice. Just apply the techniques in a good manner yourself as taught by #sensei. Novices can follow your lead then. If they really need a verbal explanation, they will ask for solicited advice and it is okay to respond then.
Aikidō is about discovering yourself and making #budo experiences. Not about teaching others.
