I'm amused by several things about https://freeourfeeds.com/ the "free ATProto" campaign but not the least of which is that the preview image fetched for that page looks like the Diaspora* logo

@cwebber @eloquence Isn't there like... already this whole network free from billionaire control that half this list of people has already been on?
@ocdtrekkie @cwebber @eloquence Unfortunately, I think it is their experience here that making them want to use AT
@ocdtrekkie @cwebber @eloquence And that has failed at all to attract or retain any of the normies from the other half of the list? Much love for mastodon but half of us don’t know who the celebs on this list are and the other half will attack you for even caring who a celeb is.
@luis_in_brief @ocdtrekkie @cwebber @eloquence
they are raising $30m. for all the years #ActivityPub has existed, has it even had $1m total spent on it? use that money to build all the stuff people want but with #ActivityPub. they are basically admitting that #ATproto is not currently designed to be decentralized the way they want it yet either.
@luis_in_brief where do I fit in your half-and-half, knowing some of the celebs but thinking that BlueSky isn’t the solution (in addition to *yet-another-big-money-tool* I see quite a few people giving up on it, because the quality of communication is better here) and wishing that they worked with Mastodon instead?
And seeing that quite a few "normies" (in tech terms) from roleplaying circles *are* in here. And even members of the German parliament.
@cwebber @eloquence I was really confused when I read ATProto and thought "Diaspora* isn't ATProto!". I guess the logo makes a tiny bit of sense though since Diaspora* started as a Silicon Valley-owned project that struggled to balance decentralisation and profits, before becoming a charity-owned federated one. That might be what they want for Bluesky?
@cwebber @eloquence Can't help but read that as AT-ATProto myself
@cwebber @eloquence Not again!

@cwebber @eloquence This will take just $30M over three years.
@cwebber @eloquence in their defense! I just noticed that they updated their website to say that they're interested in funding ways for the fediverse and ATmosphere to interconnect. I'm particularly excited about that part because my main issue throughout this whole ordeal is that bluesky is causing a MASSIVE spoiler effect on everyone being able to choose where they want to be without losing the ability to talk to their friends. I hope that they make good on that promise
This begs the question:
What do they find so frustrating about the fediverse (Which would be far cheaper to fund and easier to influence), that they would forgo putting their efforts in the ActivityPub direction.
Is it simply that Bluesky is 10 times bigger and growing faster? An important factor, I have to admit.
@EubieDrew that's the one
There are people on that list of signatories that could match total current funding of fediverse projects w/o effecting their bank account in a noticeable way.
