OAKLAND, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Oakland County Health Division have confirmed an adult case of measles in Oakland County. This is the first confirmed case of measles in Michigan this year and the first case since July 2024.

The infected adult had recent overseas travel and their vaccination status is unknown.

"If an infected individual is shedding virus via tears, it could reach the nasal cavity, where it could go more directly to the brain," said Professor Deepak Shukla of the Univeersity of Illinois at Chicago. "I think it's underdiagnosed and understudied, but the neurological consequences, we believe, are much more severe than you would normally see with fever blisters or ocular infection."

When a person has a persistent fever that cannot be explained, it is called fever of unknown origin (FUO), and it's estimated that globally, the causes of around half of all FUO cases are never determined. Scientists have now used many diagnostic tools to re-examine FUO cases in Sub-Saharan Africa to try to reveal more about the causes of these illnesses.
