Today in Labor History April 26, 1924: The U.S. House of Representatives passed House Joint Resolution No. 184. It was a constitutional amendment to prohibit the labor of persons under 18 years of age. The Senate approved the measure a few weeks later, but it was never ratified by the states and is still technically pending. Even so, the act included many exclusions, like in agriculture. From 2015 to 2022, the number of kids working in violation of child labor laws rose by 283%. And, as you all probably already have heard, many Republican leaders are weakening child labor laws to make it even easier, and legal, to exploit kids in dangerous, low-paid jobs.

"An inquiry in Rotherham clearly recognised that “there is no simple link between race and child sexual exploitation, and across the UK the greatest numbers of perpetrators of CSE [child sexual exploitation] are white men”.
"This narrative also conveniently avoids 2020 Home Office research suggesting that most offenders in organised exploitation are white."

#Myanmar’s junta-ordered #MilitaryDraft has exacerbated a shortage of workers caused by the country’s #CivilWar, and the gap is being filled by minors who are vulnerable to #LaborRights violations, experts and rights groups said Friday.

The growth in #ChildLabor is an #underreported impact of the #junta’s People’s Military Service Law, enacted in February as part of a bid to shore up its forces amid heavy losses to various ethnic armies and rebel militias since its 2021 #CoupDetat.

Under the law, men between the ages of 18 and 35 and women between 18 and 27 can be drafted to serve in the armed forces for two years.

Today in Labor History July 3, 1835: 2000 children, mostly Irish and female, went on strike at the silk mills of Paterson, N.J., for an 11-hour day and 6-day week. They were currently being forced to work 13 hours per day Monday through Saturday, and were regularly fined for minor disciplinary infractions. Solidarity by workers in neighboring cities, including financial support from New York and Newark, helped sustain the strike for two weeks. However, the bosses eventually won the strike, but did offer a compromise of a 69-hour work week. And strike leaders, and their families, were permanently barred from future employment in Paterson.

Today in Labor History December 20, 1790: The first American cotton mill began operation in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The mill, owned by Samuel Slater, employed children aged 4-10. Ann Arnold, aged 9, was Slater’s first employee. The children worked 12-hour days, 6 days per week in the winter. In the summer, they were forced to work 16 hours per day. They spent twice as many hours in the mill than kids spend in the classroom today. Kids were fined for not working hard enough. By 1835, 55% of all millworkers were children.
