On this note, how do we feel about mirroring important documents, like videos?

Some video is trash and does not need to be saved.

On stories about the how and why of making things.

Is it worth saving from the cultural value it has to our #makers , #hackers and #builders ?

The construction techniques!

The little lessons you can save time and materials in this cost of living crisis we have found outself in!

Lost Nature – housing developers fail to deliver their ecological commitments.

A survey of new #HousingDevelopments reveals that developers are installing just half of the ecological features that they should be.

A Wild Justice report, written by researchers at the University of Sheffield, has revealed that #HousingDevelopers are not keeping legally-binding promises to help wildlife on housing developments.

A survey of nearly 6,000 #house across 42 developments found that only half of the promises to mitigate harm to #nature had been kept. Many ecological enhancements had simply not materialised, with 83% of Hedgehog highways, 100% of bug boxes, and 75% of both bat and bird boxes found to be missing from new developments.

The delivery of plant life across sites also painted a depressing picture: 39% of the #trees detailed on planting plans were missing or dead, and nearly half of the native #hedges that were supposed to be laid did not exist.

See below for full and summary reports:

The company that did the work is maintenance1st.

They did good work, were well behaved, adapted to my needs, communicated well and came in more or less on quote given my demanding adaptions as we went.

They are understaffed or over-demanded though, so while it took about as many man-hours as expected, those got spread out over twice as many calendar days as expected so it took twice as long.

It felt expensive but I think that's mostly the 25% inflation we've had in the last few years.

“We will also go after the biggest drivers of cost for the #MiddleClass & work to bring them down. And…some would argue, one of the biggest is the cost of #housing. So here’s what we will do. We will cut the red tape that stops homes from being built & take on… #corporate #landlords who are hiking #rent prices &…work w/ #builders & #developers to #construct 3M new #homes & rentals for the middle class, because increasing the housing supply will help drive down the cost of housing”

Need a roof fixer.
Perhaps not as urgent as it looks - the broken tiles may have been left there by the people who replaced the roof-ridge. The photo was taken by their boss, as evidence that they need to provide an extra quotation for this work; as I'd paid almost €6000 for the ridge and "adjacent tiles" (two blokes, one and a half days), I declined.
I'd been trying for months to get two estimates for insurance, and these were the only responders. We desperately need #builders etc. here.

Why doesn't the UK build enough houses (if you think this is behind the #housingcrisis)?

A new Competition & Markets Authority report broadly blames (as have previous reviews), the planning system, arguing that any land banking is more a symptom of problems, than a cause of lower build-outs in residential property.

For the #builders, this handily throws the problem back to the politicians... but in the end even if the planning system was 'fixed' the problems are more complex than just that!

Question: MDF or OSB board underlayment over existing underlayment to strengthen floor?

Our house is aged and the flooring underlayment is also the finished floor, like 2" tongue and groove, and it's not holding up too well with my medical equipment.

We had extra bracing added at delicate areas between joists that was causing problems, like where my motorized wheelchair puts weird pressure. ( see below.)

Want to have new underlayment put down. Any tips. Suggestions? #Builders #Remodel

How the housing industry is working to stop energy efficient homes

"Home #builders have used their political muscle to prevent states and cities from adopting the latest code, which would lower the #climate impact of new houses

#EnergyEfficiency advocates say affordability is a convenient talking point for the home builders. They say the industry is mainly concerned with its profit margins"

Cracked tiles, wonky gutters, leaning walls – why are Britain’s new houses so rubbish?

Buying a brand new property these days is often less of a dream home, more a living nightmare.

With housebuilders – and their shareholders – making huge profits, how come so many new builds aren’t up to scratch?
