On the third segment of episode 5 of the Raised Beaches Podcast, I discuss about the discovery of the greenhouse effect and how the term "greenhouse effect" was coined. I also talk about the greenhouse effect on Venus and Mars.

Imagine parting the veils of clouds that obscure Venus, and seeing through the crustal basalts to understand the mantle beneath. This is the journey Julia Semprich (@planetju) took us on as the Mineralogical Society of America Distinguished Lecturer.

#Comet PanSTARRS, #Moon, and #Venus
Comet PanSTARRS, with two tails, brightened and passed close to Earth in July. Captured near Tauranga Harbour Inlet, NZ, it's seen left of a Norfolk Pine, flanked by Pohutukawa trees, with Venus, a crescent Moon, and Jupiter overhead. It will soon fade into southern skies.

This week love and money are in the air when retrograde #Mercury and retrograde #Venus align with dreamy #Neptune in intuitive Pisces for the last time for generations to come ... because Neptune leaves #Pisces this weekend and won't return for 165 years! On the positive side: you can trust your intuition to buy a lottery ticket. But on the negative side, you don't know when to stop and squander your hard-earned money on a bad bet ... in money and love. https://antinousstars.blogspot.com/2025/03/astro-forecast-march-27th-6th-2025.html
APOD from 2014-08-21
Venus and Jupiter appeared very close in Monday's dawn, their nearest since 2000. This photo from Elba, Italy, shows them above the Tuscan coast. Venus moved towards the sunrise, while Jupiter rose higher. They'll meet again on June 30th at dusk.

Venus and the Triply Ultraviolet Sun
This was a very unusual type of solar eclipse. Typically, it is the Earth's Moon that eclipses the Sun. In 2012, though, the planet Venus took a turn. Like a solar eclipse by the Moon, the phase of Venus became a continually thinner crescent as Venus became increasingly better aligned with the Sun. Eventually the alignment became perfect and the phase of Venus dropped to zero.
Antinous as #Amor #Eros Cupid now shoots his arrow to your heart as the #Sun aligns with #Venus in audacious #Aries to enhance chances for money and love! And since Venus is retrograde, expect a blast from the past! Next week's #Antinous #MoonMagic #astrology forecast: https://antinousstars.blogspot.com/2025/03/astro-forecast-march-20th-2025.html
At the March #Equinox we weep for slain #Adonis, gored in the groin by #Mars (in the guise of a boar) in jealous rage over #Venus' desire for the handsome mortal. #Antinous oft likened to Adonis, Classical ideal of male beauty. https://antinousstars.blogspot.com/2025/03/we-mourn-death-of-antinous-adonis.html Statue: Hermitage
The planet #Venus as a crescent over the horizon at dawn and at dusk ON THE SAME DAY, namely today, 20 March 2025: imaged from Bochum, Germany, when the vertical distance between Venus and the Sun was ~7° at both times. Images at 5:58 CET and 19:17 CET, with the Sun 6 1/4° and 6° below and Venus 3/4° and 1 1/2° above the horizon, resp. See https://www.facebook.com/dan.fischer.393/posts/pfbid0NakYBmYqj3XdWDGERZzvtzy4s88SipZBaPymMN8anFJrgQMfX1auN8VvDGnYAGHsl for image sequences from morning and evening over 15 and 20 minutes - Venus was never seen with the naked eye but easy in binoculars.
Have a beautiful Day of Aphrodite aka Venus' Day aka Frigg's Day aka Friday
"I will sing of stately #Aphrodite, gold-crowned and beautiful, whose dominion is the walled cities of all sea-set Kypros. There the moist breath of Zephyros the westwind wafted her over the waves of the loud-moaning sea."

The #Equinox ushers in the Astrological Year of #Venus 2025. The next 12 months will be ruled by #Venus, according to an ancient astro-alchemical calendar. After #Mars 2023, and Sun 2024, we can hope for a more harmonious year under Venus. More here: https://antinousstars.blogspot.com/2025/01/2025-is-year-of-venus.html
Yesss! I found #Venus 10 hours and 51 minutes apart in the evening *and* then morning sky over Bochum, Germany: the left picture was taken at 19:28 CET on 18 March (Sun 8° below, Venus 2° above horizon, vertical separation 10°), the right one at 6:19 CET on 19 March (a bit shorter focal length; Sun 3 1/2° below, Venus 3 1/4° above horizon, vertical separation 6 1/2°). On 20 March the situation will be pretty balanced: the vertical separation both in the morning will be about 7 degrees.
More fun with #Venus close to solar #conjunction over #Bochum, Germany, on 18 March: the planet low over the city as a tiny crescent. More pictures from this evening in https://www.facebook.com/dan.fischer.393/posts/pfbid0RSXnQwxXK7SW9TLob5L7zutRHLgXQ8kPSnVDgV75mX7tqNk3r3E8raHWv8inKhd4l - with the prediction that the evening apparition will last another two days (while the morning apparition has already begun).

The planet #Venus at dusk over Bochum, Germany, this evening: still pretty obvious, one week before conjunction with the Sun. On the right two attempts to catch the narrow crescent phase - also evident in binoculars - with maximum digital zoom. Oh, well ... ;-)
