Probably vote this week.

Anyone known the current situation on #RoboDebt folk who were refered to the (edits) NACC?
The grubs skated under Albanese?

Or is there still a possibility that some of those responsible in part for victimising +400,000 vulnerable Australians and for perhaps triggering AIUI some 2000 deaths will get a taste of justice, even just enough to act as a deterrent to other politicians and public servants who prioritise "getting ahead" over taking responsible action.

@paul @Lazarou see also #robodebt in Australia, where the law said benefits were payable based on weekly* earnings, but taxes are due on annual earnings. The government divided annual earnings by 52* to get weekly* earnings, and anyone who got more unemployment benefits than that had a debt assigned. So if you got benefits for part year because you were (say) out of work for several months, then you got a job, you got a debt.

The debts were illegal.
The math was criminally wrong and they knew it.
People killed themselves over it.
The only reason we know it happened though is that we had an inquiry and the truth finally came out.

*actually fortnightly but I don’t know what word to use for that in American English.

@cdarwin

In #Australia, we had a #Robodebt scandal, where the super-conservative government of Scott Morrison (/spit) enacted a program of clawing back the "overpayments" of Welfare to #socialSecurity recipients.

To add insult to injury, the "overpayments" targeted people who tried to eek out a living with casual work...
...the consequences was up to 4000 recipients committed suicide as a consequence.

The (millionaire) minister responsible was told the algorithm was incorrect on at least 3 occasions...
...no human was ever found responsible for this abuse.

I am willing to bet, this social security cut will result in rTump and Moskovitz literally killing people...

...but what do you expect from "...the undesirables ought to be converted into biodiesel"

Cruelty is the point.

That 433,000 figure is from the (apparently undated), article below.

I'm very critical of the article.
It asks, "Why was the #Robodebt scheme established?

And answers that reducing national debt was a priority and that, "One strategy to reduce debt was to recoup welfare support overpayments."

This explanation ignores the decades long victimisation of the unemployed by Labor and LNP governments. And ignores too the political grandstanding around "welfare fraud".

stories.uq.edu.auHow to avoid algorithmic decision-making mistakes: lessons from the Robodebt debacleThe unprecedented amount of data generated in society today has enabled the creation of powerful decision-making artificial intelligence (AI). While there are benefits of algorithmic decision-making, including efficiency, cost savings and operational transparency, its use can also have unintended negative consequences. This was the case with Centrelink’s Online Compliance Intervention program – otherwise known as Robodebt.

There is a dreadful calculation that can be made from the figures in that article.

People whose benefits were cancelled:
1280 + 964 = 2244
Deaths discovered: 10
Deaths of 0.4456%

Total number of people directly targeted by #RoboDebt: 433,000
Rumoured number of deaths: 2000
Rumoured death figure as a percentage: 0.4619%

The similarity between 0.4456 and 0.4618 gives me confidence in the figure of ~2000 dead for RoboDebt.

Numbers do not include family and dependents impacted.

#Australia's #RoboDebt was the product of a broken system.

Both LNP and #Labor governments have used the welfare system to victimise the unemployed.

And that system has repeatedly operated illegally.

Individual publc servants, the public service union, departments, ombudsmen, commissioners, individual politicians, political parties, the parliament, the whole damned government have failed.

Cf #AgedCare #InstitutionalisedChildAbuse

The latest. Note the deaths.

Amazing timing.

Any ideas who the Morrison faction would put up to replace Dutton?

(It's strange writing "the Morrison faction" - seems similar to Stalinists continuing for decades after Stalin's large number brutalities were revealed.
But maybe #RoboDebt and #MinisterForEverything is all good with some folk?
Wondering who is in faction. Ben Morton (The Apprentice)? Who else?)
