At least 602,000 children in Gaza at risk of permanent paralysis

The Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip has likened Israel’s prevention of polio vaccines in the besieged and bombarded territory to “a time bomb that threatens to spread the epidemic”.

In a statement, it said 602,000 children in Gaza were at risk of permanent paralysis and chronic disabilities unless they could receive the desperately needed vaccines.

@Asbestos Polio causes paralytic symptoms in less than 1% of cases. About 75% of cases are completely asymptomatic; most of the rest get only cold-type symptoms. It is, however, fiercely infectious. Those few kids who needed braces or a wheelchair were just the tip of the iceberg. Probably half the town was getting it. And spreading it to others who might have far worse symptoms than the source case.

I wish people today were half as afraid of #COVID19 as people from your dad's era were of #polio. Rightly so; a high percentage of asymptomatic cases does NOT make a disease harmless. And yes, this is the kind of fire #BrainWormsJr is asking us to play with when he disparages vaccines.

@mt @rebeccawatson It's sad that my grandparents' generation dies of old.age, cuz they flexed their trauma of loosing up to half of their classmates to #Polio so hard, they not only vaccinated their children, but basically said: "You'll vaccinate your children or we will will disown you!" to their own children.

This has me terrified.
I am a parent to an #autistic child with #adhd. She is not broken. She does not have a disease that needs to be cured.
She has a #neurotype that is only recently being acknowledged and accepted.
#neurodivergence need sto stop being seen as "other" or as needing to conform to some arbitrary "normal".
#vaccines save lives. There is 0 link with vaccines and autism.But even if there were, if you'd rather your child have #polio than autism, you shouldn't have kids at all.
