I put aside my Nordic walking poles during the winter — too frequent rain, occasional snow. As spring approaches, the poles are back. I wanted to start gradually since I've not used my arms and upper back on my walks for the past few months. It's going well. The past 3 walks, with the poles:
Fri: 2.48 miles, 3.50 mph, 111 spm
Sat: 2.58 miles, 3.52 mph, 112 spm
Sun: 2.82 miles, 3.55 mph, 113 spm
It feels good to be walking with the poles again. Using them makes the walk easier, even though one burns 20% more calories when using Nordic walking poles (because engaging the muscles of the arms and upper back). However, using the poles somewhat reduces the effort of the legs, so the walk feels easier, and it is certainly more enjoyable.
