Today (Feb. 16) is the anniversary of the first completed U.S 9-1-1 call, placed on February 16, 1968. Here's my "How NOT To Use 9-1-1" limerick to celebrate:

The emergency number is meant
For a notably urgent event.
So don’t call 9-1-1
When your steak’s overdone,
You’ve lost keys, or to vent about rent.

Two animal limericks in one day! Why? Because, not to be outdone by the groundhog, it's also World Ostrich Day.

The ostrich’s rep has been bruised,
And ostriches aren’t amused.
We have all been misled;
They don’t bury their head
In the sand. They are falsely accused.

So if someone you know tends to hide
From the facts, shield the ostriches’ pride.
It’s time to adapt;
Find an insult more apt
Than “ostrich” with which to deride.
