Though i played those "Early Gen X" consoles with friends or older cousins, the first ones that were "mine" were "Core Gen X". It was the Apple IIe, the Atari VCS, and the 4MHz IBM PC clone that really captured my heart. And we used the Commodore PET at school.
Which one was yours?
Anyone have any tips on where to get started with performance profiling on old 8-bit systems?

Ah the 80s. Man this brings back memories. I'm actually old enough to remember using many of these older computers. #Computers #Vintage #ClassicComputing

Here's a question to the #Forth and #DXForth users out here in the #Fediverse
I've been asked if I knew how to get in touch with the author of DX Forth. Well, unfortunately I don't.
So if any of you knows who is in charge of that project and how to contact that person, please let me know.

Anyone recommend the best way to dispose of these 9 track tapes I have had laying about for years?
There’s something lost in the instantaneous gratification of today’s technology. Anticipation. @cabel’s exquisitely detailed blog post this week got me reminiscing… #technology #retro #reminiscence #childhood #classiccomputing #geek https://reviews.ofb.biz/sa1155
Oh well, I fnished the ZX81 plus 38 mainboard but it's *NOT* working.
I do not get any composite video signal out. There's not even a black screen!
I already followed all the hints in the manual:
I checked the logic ICs and they all get 5V from the power supply, as is expected.
The I checked the clock signal on the various ICs as recommended by the troubleshhoting section of the manual. I used my Hantek oscilloscope to check and the clock signal is active and can be measured at the ICs mentioned in the manual.
Anyone who finished this build successfully got a hint where to look next?!

... and that's all the IC sockets done. Time for a break and a nice cuppa !!
Then I'll put the ICs into the sockets and (hopefully) the thing starts up ... stay tuned!

Okay, so that's the keyboard connector finished. The pin headers will plug nicely into the connectors on the mainboard.
Back to soldering IC sockets ...

Yay!! My #Reichelt order arrived today and I've been able to place all the missing resistors, diodes, transistors and capacitors, along with the audio jacks and the first two IC sockets (RAM and ROM).
But I'm getting too tired and will stop for tonight, tomorrow the rest of the IC sockets will be placed.

... some lunchtime tinkering and I've got CP/M console output (only 40 columns of course!) working on my #tms9918a video card module for the #rc2014 DIY computer kit. I had to re-configure, re-compile and burn a custom #RomWBW image to do so.
Keyboard input still comes in via FTDI serial, but issuing "DEVICE CONOUT=COM4" on the CP/M command line redirected stdout to the video card.
Heute auf der #ClassicComputing tatsächlich nicht nur super spannende Rechner, sondern auch @Iggi1968 entdeckt - ein sehr schöner Zufall!
