I'm seeing the usual calls for warm clothing donations for unhoused neighbours because I follow a lot of knitters, but my friend who works at a free lunch program says they could also really use usb cables, chargers, and battery packs.
So if you've got some old conference swag or have been procrastinating on getting rid of your old battery pack because it still works, remember you can donate that stuff!
@terri I collect old cell phones and tablets and distribute them through a day shelter attached to a local food shelf. There is limitless demand even for 10+ year old phones as they are constantly damaging or losing them (often by theft). Most of the work is helping people do a factory reset. I get some chargers and cables but also buy those in bulk for around $4.50 per set. Phones = access to housing, jobs, benefits, health care, family
@m750 @terri I can find homes for the phones if they are not carrier locked, or if they were on Verizon or AT&T I should be able to unlock them. They would also have to be factory reset and removed from any Apple/Samsung account so that a new person can adopt them. The iPhone 6 can only run iOS 12 so it can't install apps but could still be used for phone/email/web. The Samsung S9 can run Android 10 so that's all good. If the iPhone is actually a 6S and not a 6 then it could run iOS 15.
