“Though still largely unknown, today roughly 1/3 of Syrian territory is governed not by a nation-state but through a federation of participatory local councils… based on the principles of… women’s liberation, ethnic and religious pluralism, a democratized economy, and ecological #sustainability… [through] a decentralized system of #directdemocracy in which decision-making takes place through local popular assemblies”
Incredible to only now learn of this: https://bioneers.org/rojava-revolution-womens-liberation-democracy-and-ecology-in-north-east-syria-ztvz2406/?trk=feed-detail_main-feed-card_feed-article-content #ecosocialism
Also mind-blowing was how this began when the #Kurdish Worker's Party leader was imprisoned & read Vermont ecologist #MurrayBookchin:
"it abandoned the demand for an independent state because #Ӧcalan now argued that all nation states were inherently oppressive. Instead, he advocated the building of a decentralized system of direct democracy in which decision-making takes place through local popular assemblies, so people can come together and decide what they need for their collective affairs."
Lots of people have said similar about participatory democracy and citizens assemblies in alternative, lefty and coop groups (ntm teal organizations) for as long as I remember.
But how many of us know that there's apparently a group of 5 million running their society and economy like that, right now?
And in the aftermath of a horendous civil and interstate war (while facing ongoing attacks).
@nicol there’s a good book outlining Rojava’s system https://www.plutobooks.com/9780745336596/revolution-in-rojava/
