kind of odd that we consider human self-aware consciousness the be-all and end-all of intelligence, when the actual operation of the vast majority of our mind is concealed from it

if we perceive ourselves doing this at all, we perceive it as deciding to look at someone's face or hands because we have an interest or an urge to. but under the covers is an entire array of subsystems working together (or not), each with their own genetic, environmental, and historical biases.

"They found that identical twins are much more likely than fraternal twins to move their eyes in the same direction at the same time. They also found identical twins tend to spend a similar proportion of time looking at eyes, with a correlation score of 0.91 compared with 0.35 for fraternal twins; non-siblings scored close to 0."
