Greetings from my new home on @SocialCoop !
Forgot to post an #introduction, whoops. I'm Simon, a long time fediverse user since 2018 as @fraggle@octodon.social. Since octodon is shutting down, this is my new home.
My primary nerd interest is in retro computing and particularly the classic Doom games; in the Doom modding community I'm known for creating Chocolate Doom and leading the Freedoom project. I'm an open source developer and most of what I do, I release as open source.
The @SocialCoop instance appealed to me when choosing a new home as I'm intrigued by its use of the cooperative organisational structure to do social networking. Cooperatives in general I think provide a good model for how we can structure our society differently to break out of the toxic hypercapitalist mold we find ourselves in nowadays. That goes double for the the tech industry and particularly for social media. It feels good to be taking part in a different way of doing things.
I've also become a strong believer in what I've seen others call Digital Sovereignty, or in other words - online communities owning their own infrastructure. The Doomworld forums (where I'm a long-time moderator) are one example that only recently became fully community controlled. But better known example is the Doom Wiki, where we originally used Wikia (now Fandom) for hosting and have regretted that decision for years since.
