Abuse of government surveillance is in living memory in Europe
Even if you trust your current government to bypass encryption to protect children, a future government may abuse that power

@eob encryption should be secure by default to avoid third party backdoor
@eob abuse of government surveilance happened this decade in Europe. https://notesfrompoland.com/2023/09/08/senate-commission-finds-polish-governments-use-of-pegasus-spyware-to-be-illegal/
@enkiusz Yes indeed. And I was glad to see the current Polish government adding their voice to the above document, presumably referencing the abuses of the previous government
@eob This is a rare moment when I'm proud of my government.
@eob
Living memory? Following the news, I get the impression that people in Europe have forgotten. Even in countries where it was only a few decades ago.
@src_esther Yes it is disheartening how fast people forget
Though at least, in the above document, the current Polish government has weighed in, with an allusion to the abuses of the previous government
And it's not just authoritarian governments that pose a risk. Even in my consistently democratic country of Ireland, which has escaped the oppression of Naziism, Stalinism, and modern authoritarianism, there had still been occasions in recent history where authorities have abused wiretapping
@eob
A future government WILL abuse this power. And so is the current one. Well, bot the government itself as a whole, but single people do. The only Option to avoid this is to never let an opportunity to do it by design. That is why at least german government representatives try to undermine that.
