"Federico is rediscovering the joy of using the iPad

I'm interested in useful explorations about using the iPad. It's experiments with iPad modularity, useful iPad apps and discussion of workflows and use cases that keep my attention. But his current article is one that digs into what it means to use the iPad as a tool in a larger toolbox and I enjoyed it."

@dennyhenke I liked this article, a lot. As someone who dislikes the iPad for a plethora of reasons you made a lot of sense here. Good work. Now I dislike the iPad less.

@Ronnie Thanks for reading, glad you liked it!

@dennyhenke While the uses are interesting, you hit the real nail on the head—so much of the content is waffling between devices and neither is 100% perfect all of the time.

I was thinking, “Didn’t he *just recently* chop off a MacBook’s screen to make some hybrid? What happened with that?”

Love your sentiment of finding the device(s) that work for you—I love the iPad, but found I was never using it, so I’ve pared down to MacBook Air + iPhone, but I won’t begrudge anyone who is iPad-only.

@dennyhenke …I think the bigger gripe I have with a lot of tech influences/writers is that they’re constantly throwing money for fiddly things and maybe not carefully buying to begin with. While it’s great one can afford to swap devices every few months, many cannot for their personal use and/or work somewhere where things are on long buying cycles.

Not trying to be pissy, just there’s too many swapping devices annually when they can last awhile (and doesn’t set a great example for readers.)

@ecschwarz Agreed 100%. This bothers me a lot too. There's no regard or thought about climate, resource use, waste. Can't say I'm surprised given these folks are predominately wealthy residents of the global north that historically have used far more than their share of resources. And techfluencers are almost always setting the wrong example regarding use of technology. They seem unaware or just unconcerned. It's ridiculous.

@ecschwarz Yeah, he removed the screen and added magnets to use the iPad with it as a hybrid to be used with the Vision Pro which he had previously determined would be his primary computing device. Fits with your other post about pundits buying everything.

It reflects on the relevancy of what they are writing in relation to normal people using tech. A part of the problem of tech "journalism" is that it's not really dependable as a place to go for practical tech knowledge.

@dennyhenke Yeah, I remember that and it got picked up by every other site (myself included)—that was only back in March! I wonder what happened to it?

While I do replace my phones a bit sooner than I probably *could*, I try to hold on to everything else as long as I can as a primary device.

I’d love to see more content centered around old devices doing useful things—my significant other’s daily driver is an iPhone 13 and it’s still a fantastic device even for content creation!
