I'd like to learn to darn a sock - just saw a video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DOmm8HL5fwY about how to make a patch using a Speedweve Style Mending Loom and that seems fun. I'd like to try it out before I buy a bunch of stuff. Anyone in #Queens #NYC have one and interested in letting me try theirs out? Or maybe I could check whether one of the NYC makerspaces has one I could try.
@aparrish maybe you have some advice or tools you could lend?
@brainwane i have not tried a mending loom but have always wanted to! i have tried weave darning without a loom https://youtu.be/Xaq3kwHGbDk?si=q1jLOM3bwqOpzR7p but that would probably be tricky on a sock, since the (presumably) knit fabric would be so stretchy
@brainwane I've been meaning to 3d print one of these, if cost is the main issue for a speedweve, then finding a friend or space with a printer is probably cheaper. It's probably like less than $10 of filament. of course, it potentially creates plastic waste in a way that a wood and metal speedweve doesn't. And I think the hooks aren't as movable so it's not as speedy. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4797973
@brainwane I have one you can try. If you come to SNFL library Friday Crafternoon I can make it available https://www.nypl.org/events/calendar?keyword=crafternoon&target%5B%5D=ad&city%5B%5D=man&date_op=GREATER_EQUAL&date1=03%2F13%2F2025&location=&type=&topic=&audience=
@Lauren Thank you so much! Hope I can make one!
@brainwane If you want a speedweve style patch, the speedweve is definitely the easiest way to make it.
You can also freehand it, but it will look a lot less tidy.

If you're doing socks, traditionally you put something inside the sock, to give it shape while darning it (and prevent you from accidentally darning the sock to itself).
@brainwane not an answer but the existence of such a tool is a revelation to me & I appreciate learning about it
