NYC recently put into effect the world's first law requiring independent audits of hiring algorithms. Is it working? What can policymakers learn from it?
Lauren Weber at the Wall Street Journal has just published a first look at findings of a new CAT Lab + @datasociety@mastodon.social & Consumer Reports study on compliance with Local Law 144.
Later this afternoon, we'll publish the pre-print, led by @lucaswright, that involved organizing 155 undergraduate student investigators.
The world is watching NYC's new hiring algorithm law. In this study we ask: is it working?
In this pre-print, our team worked with 155 students to look up employers, learn about jobs, and study employer compliance with the law.
- Out of 391 employers 18 published required audit reports
- Employers made it practically impossible for job-seekers to exercise their rights
- We doubt all employers are complying
- But loopholes make it possible for them to duck out
