Greta Thunberg: “I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act. I want you to act as if you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house was on fire, because it is.”

@dennyhenke This will be the coldest summer for the rest of our lives.

And our children's.

And theirs, and theirs, and theirs, and theirs.

IF we redoubled our efforts to redress Anthropogenic Global Climate Change tomorrow, and again the next day, and again the next day etc, their children miiiight be the first generation to see some improvements.

It took us about 200 years to really fk up this planet. It's going to take us a LOT longer to UN fk it. If we even can.... If we even bother trying.....

I'm not convinced we will.

@dennyhenke Four years on, and has there been any progress? Yes, she was right then and is now, that is terrifying.

As a fourteen-year-old, she could grasp and understand what the scientific community had been telling the world for the past 30 years, so why can't the policymakers? 😱

@kim_harding @dennyhenke oh that’s easy! Because they don’t care! If it doesn’t make money or bolster the rich in someway, then it doesn’t matter to them

@RoboRev
Sadly, I think you are right, I just wish that you weren't 😨

@dennyhenke

@dennyhenke yeah but unless the Chinese Indians & Russians panic- stop the Ukraine war, stop building coal plants every week, no panic in Western countries can be channeled into anything useful.

@smokeygeo @dennyhenke This. Humans are divided into competing tribes. The winning move for any given tribe is to get all the others to cut their emissions first.

If global warming does reduce the amount of arable land, there will be wars and land grabs as each tribe tries to get enough to survive. Yes that could cause a doom loop.

This does not look like a problem humans can fix, even if human did cause it. Emissions will increase and whatever the outcome of that is, we will get that outcome.

@mike805 @dennyhenke sounds like you've studied game theory!!!!!

But it's also true that China & India are responsible for WAY MORE emissions than the US, so nothing we do can really fix the problem. But we have to do something, otherwise we're in terrible position to cajole the Chinese & Indians

@smokeygeo @dennyhenke About the only thing we could do fast is a real Manhattan project to build a full working IFR and a full working MSR, see which works best (hopefully both) and then go big and offer to build them elsewhere. The MSR is obviously better because you cannot make a bomb with it, but both China and India already have the bomb so proliferation is not a concern there.

The only way to get the whole world onboard is make the replacement BETTER THAN FIRE as a source of energy.

@smokeygeo @dennyhenke The game theory part is that if greens argue, you must sacrifice, being poorer economically and weaker militarily, for the global common good... each tribe does have the option to say f-that, we are going to pursue our own tribal good instead.

Democratic leaders will fear getting voted out. Dictators who promised prosperity will fear getting carried out.

We must improve on fire. If it has to be right now, that means nuclear. (And solar, solar is getting pretty good.)

@smokeygeo @dennyhenke One more point as long as game theory is in the room. A lot of greens have called for a global youth movement to force governments to cut emissions in each country.

That just might work in democratic countries.

However, it leads to military weakness, and hands the world over to Putin, Xi, and other strategist dictators who will answer street demonstrations with machine guns and continue to pollute.

Being a tyrant might just be an advantage in "winning" climate change.

@dennyhenke
I understand what she means but living in a state of panic is not sustainable and doesn’t lead to clear thinking. A little fear helps us have the necessary sense of urgency but we need to keep that fear under control as we reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and live more sustainably as much as we possibly can, year by year.
