But I think its kind of unlikely for communities to have the resources to take on diligent maintenance of drivers, firmware, software etc.

Even projects like linux, with massive tech giants like Amazon, Facebook, IBM and Google all depending and contributing massive resources, has an ever growing list of unpatched issues.
