I find it fascinating that birds just come with engineering instructions.

Currently watching sunbirds build a nest at my balcony and I always wonder how they know how to do what they do

Ps: Realise that people thought this were the birds I am talking about lol. No, these are taken from xiaohongshu, and these are magpies.

The sunbirds in my apartment are here hachyderm.io/@liztai/114141713

I am mostly a self taught cook, though I know some Peranakan dishes. But I avoided cooking them especially for personal consumption because, have you tried cooking them? Bloody hell a dish that consumed in minutes take hours to do 😭. So in my family, our inherited Peranakan dishes are only done for special occasions like Chinese New Year.

I like simple dishes, so my cooking has evolved into a mesh of Chinese and Peranakan styles. I love veges, avoid too much oil and like using as little number of spices as possible. To my surprise a lot of people on #xiaohongshu cook the way I do and I got so many ideas from them. One similar trait we share is stir frying garlic with chill - and then adding meat or veges. It solves everything 😆

How to Overcome Social Media Trauma Dumping | Psychology Today

Trauma dumping - I learned this new term thanks to, ironically, #xiaohongshu

I feel like trauma dumping isn't a thing in Chinese social media. Not many people share their traumas, sadness, and fears on social media there. Being angry at something, yes, but sharing their sorrow and pain and personal problems? Not as big as English social media. "Face" is important to the Chinese after all.

When US folks started joining XHS in came the posts I was dreading. One US poster repeated "I am scared" over and over again.

I have a feeling Chinese folks don't know what to do about these posts and have been asking the Americans why they're doing this out of concern.

Then came Americans asking other Americans to stop "trauma dumping".

And that's how I learned about this term lol

Psychology TodayHow to Overcome Social Media Trauma DumpingTrauma dumping is alive and well on social media, but dumping is the same as venting. Learning new coping skills can protect friendships and improve mental health.

Are Western social media platforms like #X, #Facebook, Instagram etc just meaner? Is Chinese social media like #xiaohongshu better? Not really. But I can say one thing for sure: #Mastodon remains my favourite social media.

A few days ago I commented that the Chinese on #Xiaohongshu are sensitive about #ChineseNewYear being called Lunar New Year.
I promised I will find the content explaining why.
Lunar calendar - Islamic calendar. Chinese calendar - lunarsolar.
Interestingly, President Obama may be the source of the Lunar New Year term.
I think due to the massive influence of English around the world this term started being used widely, which shows how culture can be influenced/misinterpreted like this. I think the Chinese are upset that someone can just come and rename their festival like this.
(fyi not every Chinese is offended by this btw. Generally Chinese in Malaysia don't seem as bothered, tho we call it CNY).
