One more day of wild fire at the gallery.

Last weekend at AudioGalleria for my exhibition Maastopalo / Wild Fire (Albertinkatu 9, Oulu).

A vertical abstracted forest fire painting that is hanging on a white gallery wall. The painting composition is made up of vertical black silhouettes of charred trees surrounded by swirling yellow and red flames and blue-grey smoke. There are loose, translucent washes of colour over swarms of lozenges of colour making up the flames and smoke.

I've got a week until the exhibition opening, and I'm either staring at paintings or impulsively fiddling with them. And oh, hey, randomly starting ones that won't be finished in time.

A mataī seedling (Prumnopitys taxifolia), black pine. It's probably at least a couple of hundred years or more since seedlings of this species have appeared in this area south of the Wairau River.
The closest I've seen have been to the north in Pukaka Valley about 15km away.
Normally dioecious. I'm curious to know where pollen came from to pollinate this tree, and fortunate that this one's a female.
My (now deceased) father planted a tree 40-50 years ago, and now it's finally mature enough to fruit.
The irony is I never intended to return to my childhood home, but if I hadn't the property would have been sold, and someone would probably have cut the mataī down, unaware of its endemic status.
Although not endangered, these lowland podocarps are now uncommon and having one seeding in the Blenheim Ecological District is probably quite unique.
