Decent dance out tonight, though I brought two sets of pipes with me and played neither of them! Still, good to mark St George’s Day (a day late admittedly) in place of practice.
First @RedCuthbert pub night of the year, if I’m not mistaken… and we have to wait a whole two days to our next event (same excuse) on Saturday, then the same again next Thursday to celebrate May Day :-)
We launch our 2025 morris dancing season this weekend with the Bouwerie Boys Morris Dancers of New York and the Newtowne Morris Men of Boston on our annual Gilbertsville Tour in Otsego County, NY.

A week from tonight we return to the Major's Inn in Gilbertsville, NY. A week from tomorrow we dance out there and in Edmeston and Cooperstown. A week from Sunday we dance in Gilbertsville again, and then the whole shebang's over for this year. And we can start panicking over planning for the #AmericanTravellingMorrice.

Postering today for the Gilbertsville morris tour. It only snowed a little. We'll have great weather in two weeks. I'm going to keep saying that.

Aching legs, shoulders and back from the bed in the B&B, and a message to say we are already one dancer down due to illness.
So getting back on track for the day of dance to go unusually well.
He's already well on the way with this but I've only just seen it - a morris dancer is attempting to set a world record by dancing for 11 hours, and raising money for two charities at the same time.
Good luck to him - I'll be knackered after dancing for two hours with plenty of breaks this afternoon

It is traditional that the last morris practice before a “big” dance out goes badly, and the major event then goes well.
@RedCuthbert had a really good practice session last night, before dancing at Oxford Folk Festival tomorrow - so it may be terrible! There’s only one way to find out…
The good news is that while I need more practice, morris music night went well last night.
The bad news is that as I am over keen and like the different sounds of different boxes it may mean taking a second accordion (i.e. a one-row/true melodeon) as well as my main box (D/G two row) and two flavours of bagpipe (D and G)… this is somewhat encumbering.
Oh well, it is my own fault! At least I can fit my rag coat into the pipe case so don’t need a kit bag too. I hope.

“We don’t want Morris to take over our lives. One event a month, two in high season, is plenty” we said.
Somehow we have over twenty events in the next six months, and seem to still be feeling keen and saying “yes” to anything that doesn’t clash!
Maybe we *do* want Morris to take over our lives - actions speak louder than words.
Powderkegs are off to Chester today to dance with Clerical Error and Stone the Crows. This time last year was only my second ever dance out, and this is the first time I'll be re-visiting an event, which feels good. And we get to dance during a partial eclipse!

Looks like we have pinned down our location for the 2025 American Travelling Morrice. We'll be performing from July 27 to August 2 in central New York, mostly in the area around Syracuse and the northeastern Finger Lakes. Not that we have any dance stands decided yet; there's lots of work ahead!
