Already #FOSSBack #fossbackstage feels like a distant memory. But to be in a crowd of like-minded people is an awesome feeling. And it motivates like crazy. The future goal is clear, but the walk is uphill.

You ever go to link a blog post and realize you never actually finished the post? That happened to me yesterday with my #FOSSBackstage talk. So today I finished/published said post.
I present: Six Ways to Onboard New Contributors
https://relational-tech.com/blog/six-ways-to-onboard.html
It rounds up my best suggestions for welcoming newcomers:
- context-building tasks
- FRAME tasks
- tasks that utilize newcomer ignorance
- tasks that utilize newcomer expertise
- pairing
and most important: letting new contributors "just be"
Trying to capture my notes on #FOSSBackstage #FOSSBack from the last two days for internal sharing.
Realizing I need to take better notes during the event itself :-)
@FOSSBackstage Thank you for another awesome FOSS Backstage event, such a great couple of days! #FOSSBack #FOSSBackstage
The #fossbackstage event is slowly coming to a close. Thanks so much to all visitors for an awesome event!
If you missed Peculiar and I talking about CHAOSS resources to improve the health and sustainability of your OSS projects or want the links, here are the slides: https://fastwonderblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/FOSSBack_-Data-to-Action_-Build-Healthy-Sustainable-OSS-Communities.pdf #FOSSBackstage #FOSSBack #FOSSBackstage2025
there's a discussion during @geekygirldawn and Peculiar Umeh's #FOSSBackstage talk of whether it's safe/advisable to delegate dependency management to dependabot as I multi-task by merging over a dozen dependabot updates with minimal review
a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The slides on OSPO talk presented by Sri Harsha looked fantastic. Does anyone know what technology is powering them?
"Putting the Railway Industry on the Open Source Track" - this is what Cornelius Schumacher is talking right now about at #FOSSbackstage.
He explains why #OpenRail Association has been founded, shares experiences of the first year in operation with the crowd, and presents our projects and opportunities for collaboration.

All done! I'll share the recording once it's ready.
Thanks #FOSSBackstage for hosting this talk! It's the first time I've given it and I'm looking forward to iterating on it and improving it. If you know of any conferences, meetups, groups, etc who'd like to hear a version of it, LMK.
There was a ton of stuff I had to cut from the talk which I'll be posting about here and on my website relational-tech.com over the next few weeks.
As multiple people already asked for it, here are the slides of my #FOSSbackstage talk I gave yesterday on "Burden of Knowledge - Dealing with Risks in Open Source".

If you're still at the conference and would like to talk about software supply chain, identifying and managing risks strategically and ideally in a collaborative manner, find me!

Enjoy your coffee break, #FOSSBackstage stagehands! I'm sipping a homemade latte over here in DC.
When the conference resumes, I'll be giving a talk, "Relationship Problems In Open Source", about how we can view some of the most common #FOSS challenges, such as burnout, onboarding, funding, and UX, through a relational lens.
If you want a sneak peek you can check out the slides here: http://relational-tech.com/misc/Relationship%20Problems%20in%20Open%20Source.pdf
Relicensing has come up several times here at #FOSSBackstage #FOSSBack #FOSSBackstage2025 Here's a link that points to several talks, an article, and a paper with more details on relicensing and the forks that sometimes result from it. https://github.com/chaoss/wg-data-science/tree/main/dataset/license-changes/fork-case-study
Listening to a talk at #FOSSBackstage from Ashley Sametz "Commit to Inclusion: Building Better Open Source Culture" including a depressing litany of tech companies (including Amazon, Google, Shopify and Meta) that have rolled back DEI efforts. Not OK. Open source communities need to push back against this regressive trend.
I’ve loved seeing all of the references to CHAOSS in the presentations here at #FOSSBackstage #FOSSBack #FOSSBackstage2025 Peculiar and I also have a talk about using CHAOSS resources to improve the health and sustainability of your OSS projects at 4:05pm today!
@mxmehl talked about it yesterday and it came up today in the auditorium at #fossbackstage: Our red flag checker for #OpenSource projects to scan for typical risks. Check it out, it is Open Source (dah!)
Risk management in the software supply chain is going to be of increasing importance in the coming years. What do you choose? A fear- or action-driven approach? #fossbackstage
Just listened to Lea Beiermann from ZenDIS and Samuel Paccoud from DINUN about collaboration in #OpenSource across borders. Sounds really promising! One result is a collaborative Note talking tool with Markdown export:
Favourite moment @FOSSBackstage als @sampaccoud und @lea_bei live ihr deutsch-französisches Text-Editor-Tool vorstellen und auf ihrer Slide einen QR-Code zeigen und wir live auf dem Bildschirm sehen können, wie das Publikum im Saal anfängt, das Dokument zu editieren ("Ohai!", "funktioniert!")
