What the bosses of #Laser558 ( #1980s #offshoreRadio station) said was at least mostly correct, but what they didn't admit to is funders included Philip Morris (yes, the #BigTobacco company! 🚬 ) - for decades offshore stations were seen as a way of getting round strict anti #tobacco ads rules on European radio) - eventually the EU started leaning on Laser, PM pulled the funding and they closed down not long afterwards ( #RadioCaroline took over the 558 kHz frequency)

Remember when people would go to a #Drivein #theatre and #PeterGriffin would work for #BigTobacco and his commercial about #smoking was a #subliminalmessage

Then you heard that same #AImusic again.
Remember #mkultra and the patterns of sounds and images you've been taught.

Then you heard that same #AIvoice again, employing
#linguistic_analysis of the sounds it knows from the device you carry with you constantly.

Then you saw that word at the top of the screen again, like the last time you used it.

"Independent journalism for independent thinking", says The Economist. Meanwhile in the real world:

"three tobacco companies, which own some of the world’s most popular cigarette brands including Marlboro, Benson & Hedges, Dunhill & Pall Mall, have multimillion-dollar contracts with Economist Impact, extending to editorial coverage, which commonly has a pro-tobacco angle, & event sponsorship."

The Guardian · Pressure mounts on publisher of Economist over ties to tobaccoBy Mark Sweney

Ah right, if tobacco was so beneficial to your health in the 1960s ... why were there ads for miracle cures against tobacco addiction in the year 1915?

"Write today for our free booklet showing the deadly effect of tobacco upon the human system and positive proof that Tobacco Redeemer will quickly free you of the habit."

I wonder what kind of poison or quack was on offer here ;-)

@celesteh YES! Another story, in the 1920s the suffragette movement was used by propagandist #edwardbernays. commissioned by what we would call today, Big tobacco he was able to manupulate women into taking up smoking and doubling the market to include women, by making smoking a symbol of the movement.

Because it was generally taboo for women to smoke, he covertly setup a photoshoot of a small group of marching #suffrogettes, who would stop for a smoke on his command, the headline he planned was "Sticks for freedom".

By featuring this meme on frontpages #bigtobacco doubled the number of smokers... the victims didn't even know they were being sold something. #memewarfare #pr #corporatemedia #indoctrination

Putting the #BigPolluters 'on the stand' for knowingly contributing to climate change.
(D) Senator Bernie Sanders questions witness Sharon Eubanks on the legal grounds to hold them accountable. And witness Dr. Geoffrey Supran on the comparison with #BigTobacco.
But I won't hold my breath in a legal system built to protect certain classes and property instead of rights.
It all will depend in the political will !! And that bill could very well pay for the necessary changes and transitions.

Senator Bernie Sanders questions witnesses on the legal punishments for fossil fuel companies that knowingly contribute to climate change. Sanders bashes the fossil fuel industry for being big polluters, being similar to the tobacco industry and destroying the planet. Sanders calls for them to pay the price and pick up the bill."
