I watched episode one of the BBC’s #ArtThatMadeUs tonight and it was *extraordinary*.
The Staffordshire Hoard, Spong Man, Beowulf, Y Gododdin, The Lindisfarne Gospels, Mappa Mundi, Aberlemno Stones, the Bayeux Tapestry, all broad vividly to life - both in relation to their own context and contemporary art and society.
I can’t wait to watch the rest (even as it makes me want to delve further into post-Roman / early mediaeval British art…).
