“the Co-operative”
Ordinary Resolution to suspend use of X and Meta Platforms
The Co-operative recognises the current landscape of social media platforms and
their effects on our community engagement and journalistic integrity;
Recent policy changes by certain platforms, especially X, have raised ethical concerns regarding our ongoing participation;
Nonetheless, the Co-operative remains heavily dependent on social media,
1/4
particularly platforms with strong local opportunities like Facebook;
Additionally, we acknowledge the growing trend towards decentralised and ethical social media platforms, such as Mastodon and Pixelfed, and we should strive to
engage our community on these platforms whenever possible.
Therefore be it resolved that:
The Co-operative will delete its account on X (formerly Twitter) within one month following the Annual General Meeting (AGM);
2/4
The Co-operative will delete its account on Instagram within one month following the AGM and transition to Pixelfed;
The Co-operative will remove its groups from WhatsApp within one month following the AGM and transition its member group to Signal;
The Co-operative will continue to post in local Facebook groups, including its own, with a review scheduled for the 2026 AGM;
3/4
The Co-operative will support decentralised and ethical social media platforms, such as Mastodon and Pixelfed, where feasible;
The Co-operative reaffirms its belief that a local, face-to-face approach to journalism offers greater benefits than engagement on social media
