extreme nerdy question: is there a good self-hosted bookmark manager for just me? I want tags. I can live with only saving things from my main computer.

in my imagination, it's basically a config file with url, title, tags, save_date on the "backend" and the frontend shows all bookmarks or lets me click on tags and intersections of tags.

i would love to have it be a few files (maybe one or more is javascript?) that live on my fastmail file server

ooooo, looking at my old online bookmarks, it appears that i used to be able to save things by faving them on twitter? (around 2015?) that would be awesome to have back for the fediverse.

related: bookmark-rss.woodland.cafe is a site that gives you an RSS url for your mastodon bookmarks. I will try this and see if it gets me to start using bookmarks.

you grant the app read_only on your bookmarks and nothing else, so it seems pretty safe.

not clear to me if the RSS feed then relies on the bookmark-rss site existing or if it shoves all the state in the url somehow?

did a smidge of digging and it appears the author is @untitaker ! thanks for making this!

this turns out to be the perfect way for me to get the rescue-trans-rescue.glitch.me link in front of myself when I'm at the computer instead of on mobile. Bought some great art!

@ansate I used to have an IFTTT that copied twitter faves to Pinboard.in

@annika i probably used somethign like that!

@annika I think it was only faves that had links in

@annika I am wanting to move off of pinboard.in to something that lives on my domain

@ansate of you want something similar to pinboard, I recommend linkding. I switched over a few months ago and it's been great. I have a cron job script that adds bookmarks from reddit and other places. There are plugins for Firefox (and probably chrome based browsers). The pinkt app on Android supports linkding. I'm not sure about iOS support though.

@radiant_tangent thank you! It’s super helpful to hear from someone using one of these options!

@ansate There's a native bookmark feature, but it's barebones, just saves the post. Might be something built on top of that?

Have been thinking about some kind of bookmark manager recently also, but haven't done much. This list has some options: github.com/awesome-selfhosted/

Any static-hosted thing likely has to depend on your browser storage, so likely needs a DB serverside. Happy to stand something up if one of the things in the list looks promising.

@ieure yeah, I’m hoping folks have actually used some of these and will speak up. I will try not to roll my own with yml and JavaScript

@ansate no, all your bookmarks essentially will pass through my service. the url is very much dependent on both your mastodon and the service itself, in terms of uptime.

the service doesn't store any data though.
