An important question to ask yourself before using is whether the task is worth the water and energy the data center will use to complete it.

@Julie OK sincere question, not snark -- where does the water GO? right? it's not just like it's destroyed! is it heated up and then dumped into a river at elevated temperature? is it evaporated with cooling towers? like, the water isn't just CONSUMED. is it?

Julie Goldberg

@enantiomer “Tech giants have significantly increased their water needs for cooling data centers due to the escalating demand for online services and generative AI products. AI server cooling consumes significant water, with data centers using cooling towers and air mechanisms to dissipate heat, causing up to 9 liters of water to evaporate per kWh of energy used.”

@Julie @enantiomer and at least part of the water is mixed with additives, making it impossible to dispose without treatment (more environmental impacts).
