For anyone looking to experiment with other platforms other than Mastodon, I'm admin of a instance dedicated to fitness/exercise 🏃 🏋️ 🏊

My account over there is @doug if you want to see the kind of things that get posted.

It's pretty chill. The idea is to *not* be like Strava 😂

@jared @PixelFed Yeah, it's good stuff. There's a few UI things which are a bit janky (e.g. words not wrapping properly) and I wish there was a moderator role (next release, apparently!) but otherwise a nice alternative to Mastodon and other Fediverse platforms 👍

@dajb so I Mastadon is is part/example of a Fediverse?

You're not talking about the instances (servers?) like indie.social, are you?

Why are there more than one Fediverse? And how can they differ?

@dajb

It's not super clearly described. What is a 'server' in this context? A computer that hosts files?

I thought indieweb.social was a server, and that it was synonym for 'instance'.

I thought those where part of mastadon, you described something being like a sibling of Mastadon.

I can see the value of multible servers split on topic, and topics/capacity. But what is the value of having something besides mastadon? What can those other things do that Mastadon can't?

@juliu So if Mastodon was the equivalent of Twitter, there'd be a Fediverse equivalent of Instagram (e.g. Pixelfed), etc.

@dajb

fediverse.info/explore/project

So what I now think:

- project. Feature based (video, microblogging, etc.)
- server. A computer
- instance: collection of projects on a server?

And instance is often grouped by topic, like a subreddit.

But are all messages for indieweb.social really goingt through a single computer (server)? and only stored there?

fediverse.infofediverse.infoThe bespoke fediverse guide
@juliu @dajb Mastodon is only one type of software able to interact on the fediverse - Pixelfed, Pleroma, Misskey, PeerTube, and so on can all do the same and interact with each other forming the fediverse as a whole.

"server" is a sort of synonym for "instance", but also an "instance" can have many "servers" to help split the load - so best to use "instance" in most cases unless you know otherwise.

@paul @dajb thanks. Can you have an identy that is same on different instances and different projects?

It seems not, but perhaps there is a way to neatly connect them?

@juliu @dajb well, you can do it in any way you like.
You can have one identity, and follow and interact with anyone from any of those other platforms
Or, you can create different accounts on each platform to use solely on that one

However you do it is up to you. Having a single account keeps everything in one place, but to follow people you have to know their "handle" (their @name@instance.url). Or, you may just seem them pop up in your own instances timeline, in which case you can just follow them easily.
Having different accounts makes finding people easier, but you then have to manage multiple accounts.

@paul @juliu Yes, what Paul said. Also 'nomadic identity ' is definitely being worked on, and already exists in some forms (e.g. )

@dajb @paul thanks all for taking the time to explain. Much appriciated!

@dajb Supernice! I've joined a few days ago on metapixl.com as I wanted to start somewhere on a relatively small server, but have a REALLY hard time finding other #fitness / #crossfit / #weightlifting related #pixelfed people. Your account looks very empty for me...?

@zegmaarhayke Have you clicked on the option to 'view on remote server'?

(you have to remember that the Fediverse is decentralised and every sever can't cache everything from everywhere 😉)

@dajb Tried to add a screenshot, but it's busy at my :mastodon: instance so I can't :-)

I can see a 'view remote profile' option when I search on your handle, and click on the wheel next to your picture. I then am forwarded to your profile page at exercise.coffee. I can't find any other way to add you to my timeline in my settings or anywhere. Is that as intended, something wrong with my instance, or should I just join exercise.coffee instead? ;-)

@zegmaarhayke Sounds like your instance is borked!

You should always be able to follow an account on a remote server from your own instance (unless it's been blocked)

Viewing a remote instance is useful to see posts that haven't been cached by your own instance yet.
