"How, Milton [Friedman], do you propose to convince the vast majority of people that they should settle for being forelock-tugging plebs, groveling before their social betters for the chance to scrub their toilets?"
#MiltonFriedman had an answer: "In #timesofcrisis, ideas can move from the fringe to the center in an eyeblink. Our job is to keep good ideas lying around, in anticipation of that crisis."
Friedman was a monster.
But.
He had a hell of a #theoryofchange."

Always a good time to revisit these thoughts from adrienne maree brown, the People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit, and the Jemenez Principles:

Disagreement and conflict are inevitable in coalition work, and methods for working through those inevitabilities can be built into coalition processes.

Something I appreciate in Rose’s work is a commitment to speaking of a better world that we have not yet made real and to the long-term work required:

“I said some years ago, when laying our claims before the legislatures, ‘I know you are not prepared to give us all we ask, but we claim all our rights. We ask for no more; we can be satisfied with not less. yet we will take what you are prepared to give us, and claim the rest.’”

I wouldn’t normally link to Youtube (even if it is via Invidious) but this chat between Mike Berners-Lee and @GreenRupertRead on ways of tackling the #polycrisis is worth the 40 minutes of lughole infiltration. 👂

“There’s no way that politicians are ever going to lead us from the front through this, we have to push them into a position where they start to lead us.”

Agroecosystem is a promising shift in how we feed ourselves that has been under developed outside of academia for a number of political and economic reasons. Scientists, food security advocates, and social justice organizations need to rethink how we can leverage an integrated understanding of social and ecological systems to feed ourselves in the future. A thread thinking out loud on change and coalition, inspired in part by encountering a viewpoint that coalition members sharing concerns harms the coalition.

Such harm is not impossible, but it raises other questions that feel under-discussed: What are productive ways to raise concerns? What do we do when we disagree with each other on how concerns should be raised?

Moving from damage-centered research to desired-centered research shifts the kinds of questions scientists ask and how communities see themselves. Desire does not hide the damage of the past but celebrates survival and hope. Tuck 2009 doi.org/10.17763/haer.79.3.n00

TOMORROW!

In Climáximo, our last round of reflections resulted in a complete reformatting of our framing and strategy. This is part of a movement learning process where we consulted tens of groups all around the world.

We are now ready to admit publicly what many groups feel for a long time: the governments and the corporations declared war against the people and the planet; their weapon of destruction is the climate crisis; and therefore we live in a state of war (or, mostly, in denial of it). This means we need to live, organize and strategize in a state of war; which breaks our own business-as-usual as well as puts the responsibility on us to break the business-as-usual of the capitalist system.

We think that a substantial part of our new model is in fact replicable in other countries or by other groups.

On December 19th, Tuesday, at UTC=GMT=15:00 and CET=16:00 , we are offering an online session to present our theory of change and the accompanying politics, strategy, tactics, narrative and organization.

@amydiehl Soooo many efforts seem aimed at trying to shape org member attitudes, which is really *backwards.* Rather, change the org climate by setting clear expectations about things like what are and aren't appropriate interpersonal interactions. This will then shape behaviors. Attitudes and intentions will follow. People don't have to be enlightened to be required to behave better. #SocialControl #TheoryOfChange
