Finished "The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health & Disease" by Daniel E. Lieberman.

It was a fascinating book. To think how far we the humankind have come.

In search of comforts, we cause problems for ourselves. We were not meant for many of the things we take granted.

The book also gave motivation to exercise & try to eat healthy.

I also couldn't help but to wonder if we've always been, right from the start, this cruel to each others.

#Reading Christopher Hitchens' "god is not Great," I was stunned by the explanation of Karl Marx's infamous "opium of the people" quote in more context than I'd ever encountered it.

Marx was not criticizing the use of metaphorical opium as much as the structural need for metaphorical opium.

Meaning, religion exists in part as a counter to the shittiness of civilization.

I recently finished the Hyperion Cantos series and I've been thinking about some of the ideas... Notably what happens at the end of the second book and how I see it as a metaphor to what some of us in the fediverse and indieweb are trying to do in terms of tech and healing that part of our society. I'm going to try to write a blog post or maybe do a video talking about it. I just hope it's intelligible to others. 😬

Just finished #reading Ali Meghji's book "Decolonizing #Sociology"--great analysis of how #colonialism affected the sociology discipline & theoretical #canon. He argues for subverting sociological imperialism, centering the process and effects of coloniality within sociological research, & embracing #autonomous sociologies. It's very readable & approachable, clear in argument but also in its advocacy for walking a new path. Highly recommended, even for students.

My Jewish Year by Abigail Pogrebin. I like the book’s concept, but overall it was frustrating to get through. I don’t know if as a project it has or can promote Jewish literacy, but if it reminds people that there are more Jewish holidays than just Chanukah I guess that is something. #BookReview #Bookstodon #Jewish #Books #Reading

app.thestorygraph.comReview by littlemiao - My Jewish Year: 18 Holidays, One Wondering Jew I feel fairly neutral about this book. The concept is worthy, and I support efforts to promote...

Just for fun, and since I can't really trust the Fediverse friendly #Bookwyrm, nor especially any commercial book review aggregator, to ever allow me to export all the work I have done to input my book reviews and ratings, I'm just going to make a LibreOffice Base file of my own. When I have the tables set up and get it working, maybe I'll just release it into the wild, for anyone who wants it. I'll let y'all know how it's going at some point. 😁#Reading
