BellingenNSWLifeless rock pools at SawtellAfter cyclone Alfred whipped up a 'bacteria smoothy' along Australia's east coast the sea foam then merged with a 'flush' from the suburbs. Dislodged smelly sponges at Sawtell beach made breathing and contact impossible. Even without fossil fueled disasters the intertidal zone at the north end of the beach is barren. Kit OzPurple Shore Crab (Hemigrapsus nudus), and a bit of Shakespeare.These little guys are everywhere on the shores of the Salish Sea, scurrying under rocks or raising their tiny claws at you, offering a fight.I used five different reference photos (and video stills), to cobble together a leg and claw arrangement I liked. Its facial expression turned out a little more pouty than grumpy, but that's okay; I think it still works.Soon to be for sale in the shop at the Seattle Art Museum. Kit OzI can't decide if this painted shell turned out interesting, or a dismal disappointment. It's supposed to be a tide pool with anemones, urchins, starfish, and barnacles, but... I was too excited by the subject matter of "tide pool" (I love tide pools), and didn't give enough thought to design.Next time, I'll focus on just one creature and perhaps some bladderwrack.I find that when a painting has gone wrong, it almost always went wrong in the initial design phase. I'm always sorry when I "wing it" instead of thoroughly working through questions on an initial sketch.
